The Warbirds used a complete team effort to come away with the Eastern Shores Conference tournament championship. Maybe the photo to the left illustrates the effort the team exhibited. The puck has slipped behind Fond du Lac goaltender, Rebecca Binder, but defenseman Drew Deanovich makes the save and knocks the puck away.
The first period ended the way the game began tied at zero. Fond du Lac outshot Appleton 12 to 6 in the period, but both goalies were up to the task.
Fond du Lac was able to get on the board at 5:42 of the second, when Drew Deanovich scored with an assist from Mary Skorupa. Peyton Airaudi boosted the Warbirds' lead to two with Skorupa and Megan Sprinkman assisting with 4:05 remaining in the period. Fond du Lac was assessed a major penalty for boarding at 13:51 of the second. The period concluded with the score Fond du Lac 2 Appleton 1.
The Warbirds were able to kill off the rest of the major penalty in the third period. Appleton cut the lead to 1 at 9:06 of the third, when Maddy Kapheim assisted on Annika Horman's goal. The score remained 2-1 and Appleton called timeout with 1:38 remaining in the game. The ensuing face-off was in the United's defensive zone. The United cleared the puck from their zone with 1:19 remaining on the clock and Mckenzy Hoisington headed for the bench. Appleton kept pressure in the offensive zone, but weren't able to get the puck past Binder. Fond du Lac was able to get clear the puck. Hattie Verstagen iced the game with an empty net goal with 2.1 seconds remaining on the board.
Rebecca Binder finished the game with 24 saves, while Hoisington had 27 save for Appleton.
