In an electrifying outdoor game at United Heroes League, SCHEELS® Ice Rink in Hastings, Minnesota, the New Richmond Tigers, ranked #1 in the state in Division 2, faced off against the Somerset Spartans. The Tigers, showcasing their top-tier prowess, dominated the game with a final score of 8-2.
The Tigers came out strong in the first period, outshooting the Spartans 16-8 in the frame. New Richmond took an early lead in the first period with two goals, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Bjorn Bahneman scored the first goal on the power play with assists by Matthew Unger and Steven Chapman. Four minutes later Canton Langeness added their second goal with assists from Brody Jackson and Andy Johnson.
They kept up the momentum in the second period, again outshooting the Spartans 15-8 and tallying three more goals after the Spartans got one back on a shorty by Micaiah Schuld. Unger added his first goal of the game for the Tigers with assists by Bahneman and Chapman. Zaylin Sweet extended the lead late in the period with assists by the Langenesses, Canton and Catcher. Chapman added their third goal of the frame in the second period with another assist from Unger.
Shots in the third continued the trend with a 13-7 lead for the Tigers. They added three more goals by Banheman, Unger, and Canton Langeness, while Somerset's Schuld added his second of the game.
Ryan McGillis stopped 21 of 23 in the win for the Tigers. Finn Davis and Carson Belisle split time for the Spartans in the game with Davies stopping 14 of 19 and Belisle stopping 22 of 25.
The win improved New Richmond to 10-8-1 on the season, and the loss dropped the Spartans to 9-8-2. The Tigers next game is Tuesday in Menomonie, and the Spartans will host #3 Amery that same night.
