Tenacity is What is Required

When a Game Reminds Us

As I write the recap for the Fighting Cancer game between the Icebergs and the Cap City Cougars, I can't help but recall the speech that Jimmy V gave at the 1993 Espy's. For those reading that wonder who Jimmy V was, his North Carolina State team pulled off one of the greatest Cinderella stories upsetting Houston in NCAA championship to cap March Madness in 1983. Jimmy V was diagnosed with cancer in 1992 and at the Espy's in 1993 he received the Arthur Ashe award. In his reception speech he stated, ".....We are starting the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. And its motto is, "Don't give up ... don't ever  give up".

Tonight I watched a game and Cap City was able to keep the offensive pressure on the Icebergs for the majority of the game. The tenacity they showed on the ice with the constant pressure being placed on the Icebergs' goaltender, Anika Mueller, is the tenacity I picture that everyone battling cancer has to have to endure. On the flipside, the resilience that was shown by the Icebergs team to keep fighting until the final buzzer reflects the emotions the families and the patients have to have when battling this disease. Kudos to both teams for their efforts during the game.

The first period found Cap City outshooting the Icebergs 30 to 6, but were only able to get one to slip past Anika Mueller in the period. The Icebergs picked up a penalty for body checking at 9:01 of the period. Simone Dunai was able to beat her glove side at 9:32 of the first to convert the power play opportunity and give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

The second period found Cap City increasing their lead. Addy Swenson scored an unassisted goal at 1:47 of the second to bump the lead to two. The Cougars' lead went to 3 as Lilly Wagner assisted on Ella Knapp's goal at 4:55 of the second. Cap City had a player sent to the sin bin at 11:10 of the period, but scored a short-handed goal at 12:42. This time it was Brynn Brinkmeier scoring with an assist from Grace Allison. The Cougars went down a player again at 15:18 and once again scored a short-handed goal as Grace Allison assisted on Olivia Dull's goal at 15:52. Cap City lead 5-0 at the end of two.

The third period went to runtime, when Addy Swenson picked up her second goal of the night at 1:28 of the period. This completed the scoring and the Cougars won 6-0.

Sofia Martinelli had 10 saves for Cap City, while Anika Mueller finished the game with 77 saves.
