The 21st Annual Pines Classic Tournament began this weekend, hosted by the Northland Pines Eagles. Pines and Mosinee faced off in the first game of the night with Mosinee coming out victorious, 4-3. University School of Milwaukee and Hayward met in the second game of the night and both were hungry for a win.
USM and Hayward played fast and furiously in the opening period, testing both Mac Schmidt and Brendan Thomas in their respective goals. USM led the shots 12-7 after the first period and neither team was able to get on the scoreboard in the first frame.
Hayward came out and scored thirty-five seconds into the second period on a power play carrying over from the first period after Levi Geisness was sent to the penalty box with a five minute major for boarding and a ten minute misconduct. Grant Bartz was set up by Kaden Bergman and Chase Loder on the play that gave the Hurricanes a one goal advantage.
USM tied up the game in the closing minutes of the period off of a goal by Jerzey Judge, assisted by Brandon McGill.
Hayward controlled much of the third period, outshooting USM 12-4 over the course of the period. However, USM finally broke the scoring deadlock almost an entire seventeen minutes later when Nick Epperson, assisted by Logan Geisness and Brandon McGill, gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead and eventual victory.
University School of Milwaukee will play Mosinee at 2:30 for the Championship title on Saturday. Hayward and Northland Pines will play at 12:00 for the consolation title.
