Earlier tonight, the Northland Pines girls hockey team hosted the Marshfield Co-op for a regional playoff game. Northland Pines received the 3rd seed in the sectional for playoffs, while Marshfield was seeded 6th.

The Eagles were first on the scoreboard at the 2:17 mark with a goal by Cali Sanborn, assisted by Lexi Nelson. Marshfield’s Morgan Larson was sent to the box for interference, but the Tigers killed off the penalty successfully.

Both Allison Sauvola and Christine John made shots against Maddie Hall, but were both saved. Emily Saltenberger had a shot from the blue line that was blocked by the skates of a Marshfield player.

Kali Ebert scored the second goal of the game on a breakaway with an assist going to Anna Hartwig with five minutes to go in the period. Sallie Spencer ripped the puck from the blue line as the time was winding down, but was ultimately denied by Hall.

With just under a minute left on the clock, Emily Saltenberger shot the puck from the middle of the circles and Kali Ebert picked up the rebound, tipping it into the empty half of the net. The Eagles outshot the Tigers 13-2 in the first period.

The puck saw action on both ends of the rink during the opening minutes of the second period and continued that way until Cali Sanborn got the puck and put it right through the Marshfield net-minder’s legs. Emily Saltenberger and Sallie Spencer both got assists on the goal.

There wasn’t a whole lot of other action in the second period, just an interference penalty against Christine John. The Eagles were leading 3-0 going into the third period.

Jenna Paez had a great game and proved to be a brick wall in the net, saving all eight shots recorded against her. Pines was given a bench minor for having too many women on the ice in the beginning of the final period, served by Mikala Rubo.

Emily Saltenberger fired the puck off of a face-off towards the net, but Madi Hall saved the shot yet again. Both teams had great scoring attempts but the both Hall and Paez were solid, neither one allowing a goal to be let in.

A timeout called by Marshfield coincided with an interference penalty against Anna Hartwig, but it didn’t create a scoring opportunity for either team. Northland Pines shut out Marshfield 4-0, advancing to play the Northern Edge Co-op in Rhinelander on Tuesday, February 24.
