Kiya Bronston's Claims 4 Points in Valiant Effort

Gut Check Win to Advance to State

The Cougars and Hilltoppers met at Madison Ice Arena to determine which team would advance to play at Veteran's Memorial Coliseum on Friday, March 1.

The game started at an extremely fast pace and found Onalaska going on the power play after Cap City's Kendra Sanderfoot was sent to the sin bin for slashing. Onalaska's Lydia Walz scored a power play goal with an assist from Kiya Bronston at 4:05 of the first period. Brynna Banuelos tied the game for the Cougars with an assist from Zephryn Jagr at the 9:00 minute mark. The first period ended with the game tied at 1.

The Hilltoppers took a 2-1 lead, when Bronston scored with Emily Brueggeman and Lydia Walz assisting at 3:02 of the second. Onalaska increased the lead to two on Emily Brueggeman's goal with an assist from from Kiya Bronston with 12:00 showing on the clock. Coach Thornton could be heard telling his team to keep working. Cap City was able to take advantage of Kiya Bronston being in the penalty box as Olivia Thompson scored the power play goal with an assist from Mackenzie Rosin at 9:03 of the second. The Cougars tied the game at 3 on a second power play goal at 11:40, when Brynna Banuelos scored with an assist from Lauren Bliefernicht. Amanda Bauer gave Cap City the lead with 4:19 left in the second with a diving effort to tip the pass from Lauren Bliefernicht into the net. The period ended with Cap City leading 4-3.

Kiya Bronston tied the game in the third period with an unassisted goal with 12:01 showing on the clock. Regulation ended with the game tied at 4.

The game went into the 8 minute overtime after the 3 minute break. Both teams were exhausted and digging deep to move the puck for scoring attempts. The Hilltoppers went on the power play at 5:52 of overtime. Cap City continued thwarting the scoring efforts of Onalaska. The game moved to 4 on 4 hockey at 6:57 of the overtime, when Onalaska was called for a penalty. Zephryn Jagr sent the Cougars to the state semi-finals with an assist from Mackenzie Rosin at 7:15 of overtime.
