Storm Down Wisconsin Valley Union 2-1 to Advance

The Central Wisconsin Storm have gone to the WIAA State High School Hockey tournament every year since 2008. The Wisconsin Valley Union came to Greenheck Fieldhouse on Friday to try and break that streak, and while they put up a valiant effort, the Storm won 2-1 and are headed to their 12th straight state tournament.

Neither team managed to score in the first period. The Storm lead on shots in the first period 10-2, but the best scoring chance came in the last minute of the period when the Union had a flurry in front but Sydney Weiland turned them away.

The Union kept up the pressure to start the second period and were the first team on the board when Lyndsey Glodosky was left all alone in front of the net. She beat Weiland to give the Union the lead.

The Storm came back a few minutes later on the lone power play goal of the night. Eden Gruber fired one from the point, through traffic, and tied the score.

A minute later, Maddie Federici fired one of her own from the point, off the pipe and in to give the Storm a quick 2-1 lead.

That would wrap up the scoring, and while the Storm took 27 shots in the game they didn't have another really good chance as the Union kept them to the outside.

The Union's best chance to tie it up came late in the third on a power play of their own. They controlled the puck exceptionally well and put several shots on Weiland but they were all turned aside.

The Union pulled goalie Pistol Cowden with 1:33 left on the clock but they didn't get another good chance and left with a 2-1 defeat.

Cowden stopped 25 of 27 in the game, and Weiland stopped 14 of 15 for the Storm.
