ECN goalie stops 34 shots in victory

Eau Claire North goalie Tyler Schreiter stopped 34 shots and the forward line of Joey Koller, Sam Stange, and Zach Urdahl combined for two goals and three assists as the #1 seeded Huskies blanked #4 Chippewa Falls 3-0 Tuesday evening at Eau Claire Hobbs.

The sectional 2 semifinal featured great goaltending, inspired play, and even a few moments where it looked like the teams really didn't like each other as the officials had to get in the middle to minimize the excitement.

Sam Thorp started the scoring for ECN just over two minutes in when his shot from the left point made it through traffic and past Chi-Hi goalie Jaden Hoople. Stange and Urdahl each had assists on the play.

The Cardinals couldn't take advantage of a power play chance in the middle of the period, but Stange did some work of his own on an ECN man advantage with less than five minutes remaining.

The senior Player of the Year finalist grabbed a loose puck in his defensive zone, deked a couple guys at center ice, and fired a shot from the high slot that blazed past Hoople for the 2-0 lead.

The period ended with that same score. Hoople stopped 13 shots while Schreiter made six saves in the period.

The middle period was scoreless but had its moments.

Less than a minute in, Stange misfired on a close shot on the back door that hit the side of the net. Chippewa Falls had a 3-on-1 and a 3-on-0 (bad ECN line change), but Schreiter repelled both attacks. In the period, Hoople had 14 saves while Schreiter turned away an even dozen pucks.

The Huskies succeeded in scoring early in the final period when Koller scored 43 seconds in. Jaxon Vance and Urdahl had assists on the score.

Chippewa Falls dominated the shot chart in the period but was unable to put one past Schreiter. Final saves in the period were 16 for the ECN goalie and four for Hoople. The Cardinals senior netminder ended an outstanding high school career by making 31 saves.

North will take on Hayward Saturday morning in the the Sectional 2 final to determine the state qualifier.
