Women’s Hockey Collegiate/Prep Doubleheader

Battle of the acronyms: UWEC, UWSP, CF/M, WVU to compete

Local sports fans will be treated to a women’s hockey double header on Saturday, January 26th at Ice Hawks Arena in Stevens Point.  At 2:30 the UW-Stevens Point Pointers will host the 9th ranked UW-Eau Claire Blugolds in a WIAC college hockey clash. 

Then at 5:30 the Wisconsin Valley Union will face-off against the Chippewa Falls/Menomonie Co-op.  Youth hockey girls in attendance will get a tour of the UW-SP Women’s locker room between periods of the high school game.

The Pointers (7-10-2) and the Blugolds (13-4-2) together feature 21 former Wisconsin high school products.  Seven of the Blugolds top eight scorers are Badger state products.  Former Central Wisconsin Storm players include forwards Kelly Knetter, Elizabeth & Emily Bauer and defenseman Taylor Treu with UW-Eau Claire.  Elizabeth Bauer leads the Blugolds in scoring with 23 points on 6 goals & 17 assists, while her sister Emily is 6th with 11 points. 

Other local girls include UWSP leading scorer Lauren Smith from Antigo and UWEC Courtney Wittig and Morgan Zirbel from Green Bay.  Wittig was recently selected in the second round of the Womens’s NHL by the Metropolitan Riveters.  Erin Connolly (Lakeshore Lightning) leads the Blugolds in net with a 11-3-2 record and 1.49 GAA.

Other former Wisconsin high school players include: (UWEC) Holly Turnbull (Hayward), Emma Peterson and Addie Young (Superior), and Sydney McKersie (Metro Lynx).

For UWSP: Mary Kremer (Arrowhead), Brie Larkowski (Western WI), Alex Grubbs (Hayward), and Dani Heitsman (Rock County).

AAA players from Wisconsin include: Morgan Oettinger, McKenna Butcher, Cassie Newcomer, Cara Lemirande, and Haley Sellers (all UWSP).

On the high school side, it will be Senior Night for the Wisconsin Valley Union come in with a 6-8-2 record and feature one of the state’s stingiest defenses allowing only 2.13 goals per game.  Chippewa Falls/Menomonie is 6-10-2 and is led by sophomore forward Sidney Polzin with 12 goals and 5 assists.
