Deflected shot in overtime settles it

Tuesday night in Janesville saw the Waunakee Warriors and Janesville Bluebirds hook up in a good old fashioned tightly contested hockey game.

It took the smallest of margins, but Waunakee used a deflected puck in overtime to get a 2-1 win.

The first period had Janesville up 1-0 on a goal by their leading scorer Ben Coulter. In fact, Janesville outshot Waunakee 7-0 early before the Warriors could get one shot off.

But the first one they got, they made it count.

With Janesville goalie Cody Kaas out to play the puck, it came right out in front of the goal and Keegan Ripley had the easy tally for a 1-1 tie after the first period. Shots were 12-3 Janesville after the first period.

The second and third period had plenty of end to end action. Only three penalties were called in the game and all three were on Janesville.

Waunakee could not convert on the power play chances. They had a golden opportunity to win in regulation with 2:01 left in the game and on power play but they couldn't tally.

Overtime was short and Waunakee tallied this time.

With the puck in the Janesville zone, Nick Hanes was able to get the puck from the right side and got it headed toward the net where it went off of Logan Bygard's stick and skipped into the Janesville net and the Warriors got outta town with a 2-1 win.

In the game Waunakee goalie Nick Summers stopped 22 shots, while Cody Kaas registered 18 saves. Janesville moves on to play conference rival Beloit Thursday while Waunakee plays host to Baraboo/Portage Thursday also.
