Wildcats hold large 39-10 shot advantage over Arrowhead

It took a while, but the University School co-op girls’ hockey team eventually defeated Arrowhead 4-0 in an Eastern Shores Conference game on Tuesday, January 8th at the Mullet Ice Arena on the campus of Arrowhead High School in Hartland.

The Wildcats started the game fast, and they fired the puck at Emma Tate, Arrowhead’s goalie, 14 times in the first period.  Tate stopped them all, frustrating the visitors. The Wildcats surrendered just 3 shots in the period.

The Wildcats kept firing frequently, and during the game, they outshot the Warhawks 39-10.  They finally found ways to put the puck past Tate, scoring three goals in the second period and one in the third period.

Meanwhile Sami Stommel, USM’s goalie, gained her second shutout in a row by stopping all of the Warhawks’ attempts to score.

Emily Mueller broke the scoring deadlock with a breakaway goal at 2:00 minutes of the second period.  Mueller described the play, “I blocked a shot from the point and the puck went forward. I beat the Arrowhead girls to it, and it was a breakaway. I skated it all the way and shot just above the left pad of the Arrowhead goalie and scored.  It felt really great because it broke the 0-0 tie, but also because I played with almost all the girls on Arrowhead and their head coach was my U-14 coach, so it was a good motivation for me to score and play well.”

Once the Wildcats had a goal, they were able to tally two more in the second period.  Kinzie Youngblood scored both of them.

As the Wildcats applied forechecking pressure, Zoe Uihlein won a battle for control of the puck along the left boards. She skated toward the corner, then turned and headed back along the boards.  From the outside edge of the circle, she fired the puck toward the goal.  It hit a defenseman’s stick, then it hit Tate, then it caromed out to the slot.  Youngblood raced to it and winged it past Tate at 4:28.

Youngblood scored again at 12:12. Jenna Klenz took a shot from the point.  The rebound came out to Youngblood and she backhanded it into the net, giving the Wildcats a solid 3-0 lead.

The Wildcats completed their scoring with a power play goal early in the third period. Youngblood had the puck along the left sideboards.  She spotted Klenz hustling down the slot from the point and passed it to her.  Klenz one-timed a shot that hit Tate’s pads.  The puck dropped into the crease. Lexie Epperson swiftly swept it inside the post for a goal at 6:42.

After the game, Dan Carey, the Wildcats’ head coach commented, “It was a good team win.  We had contributions from everyone tonight, and we were able to take most of Arrowhead’s scoring opportunities away.  Hopefully we can build on the momentum as we have a big part of our schedule ahead.”

Arrowhead is now 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the Eastern Shores Conference.  The Warhawks play the Cap City Cougars in a non-conference game at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, January 10th at the Ice Pond in Waunakee.

The victory improved USM’s record to 11-5 and 4-1 in the Eastern Shores Conference.  The Wildcats play the Green Bay Ice Bears in another Eastern Shores Conference contest at 7:00 pm. on Friday, January 11th.
