St. Croix wins the Battle of the Valleys

The St. Croix Valley Fusion were too fast and too strong on their sticks for the Wisconsin Valley Union on Tuesday evening in Marshfield, coming away with a 6-1 win.

Union goalie Pistol Cowden was peppered with shots early and often in the first period, but she kept the net empty until the 11:43 mark. That is when Anna Albrightson opened the scoring for the Fusion with a wrap around goal.

Cowden stopped the other 14 shots in the period, while Fusion goalie Sydney Steeley was called on 4 times.

The Fusion opened things up in the second period, starting when Albrightson spotted Juneau Paulsen alone in the slot and passed her the puck. Paulsen got off a quick shot before Cowden could get across the crease.

The Fusion padded their lead with a power play goal when Amber DeLong hammered home a rebound off a shot by Paulsen. DeLong made it 4-0 before the period ended with an even strength goal.

Cowden recorded 12 saves in the second period, while Seeley had 6.

The Union got on the scoreboard midway through the third period when Paige Bauer picked up a loose puck in front of the net and had time to pick out the corner above replacement goalie Olivia Dumand’s glove hand.

The Fusion finished off the scoring with an unassisted power play goal by Lilly Accola followed by  an even strength goal by Gabrielle Bresina with assists from Tyann Mittle and Jenna Bergmanis.

Cowden finished the night with 40 saves and Seeley stopped all 10 in the first two periods, with Dumond recording 3 saves in the third.
