Power Play Goals and a Hat Trick Lead Cardinals to Win

Halbleib's Hat Trick Leads the Way

Sun Prairie and Onalaska/La Crosse battled in the Omni Center in the game of the week. Sun Prairie's Travis Kernen picked up a two minute minor for slashing 42 seconds into the game. The Hilltoppers wasted no time in capitalizing as Mason Manglitz scored 15 seconds later with Brennan Mason and Jake Ziegelbein assisting on the play.

The Cardinals' Carter Watters tied the game at the 3:26 mark, when he intercepted a pass in the neutral zone. Watters skated in to the right of Onalaska's Jack Weber and fired the puck for the tying goal. Sun Prairie took the lead with 11:42 remaining in the period. Nick Johnson passed the puck to Roger Schoenike. Schoenike found Watters in front of the net with a pass that Watters tipped in for his second goal of the afternoon.

Onalaska's Max Popp was accessed a penalty for elbowing with 9:11 on the clock. The Hilltoppers killed off the penalty, but trailed at the end of the first period 2-1.

Onalaska/La Crosse's Kyle Comeau picked up a penalty for hooking at 4:32 of the second. Sun Prairie's Benett Halbleib scored the power play goal at 5:18 with Kaden Brunson and Travis Kernen assisting. The Hilltoppers went on the power play at 5:39 of the period, when the Cardinals' Roger Schoenike picked up a roughing penalty. Jake Ziegelbein cut Sun Prairie's lead to 1 as he scored a power play goal with Ryan Gargaro and Carter Stobb assisting.

The game saw a slew of penalties over the next few minutes. Onalaska/La Crosse tied the game at 3 with a 4-on-4 goal with 44.8 seconds remaining in the period. The goal was scored by CJ Lass assisted by Ben Fowler and Will Bryant. When the Sun Prairie penalty ended with 28 seconds left in the period, the Cardinals went on the power play. Sun Prairie took a 4-3 lead with .8 seconds showing on the clock, when Halbleib scored with Schoenike and Johnson assisting.

Sun Prairie's Benett Halbleib picked up a penalty for head contact, when an Onalaska/La Crosse player's helmet went flying at center ice with 13:53 left in regulation. The Cardinals killed off that penalty and another one that was accessed to Travis Kernen for tripping at 7:23 of the third. Sun Prairie increased their lead to two with Halbleib's third goal of the game with Brunson and Kernen assisting. The Hilltoppers trimmed the lead to 1 on an unassisted goal by Hudson Weber at 14:14 of the third.

Onalaska/La Crosse pulled their goatender with 41 seconds left in the game, but Sun Prairie kept it out of the net and held on to a 5-4 win.
