It was Senior Day at Hobbs Arena in Eau Claire and the Star’s seniors lead them to a 3-1 win over the visiting Ice Bears from the Bay Area. Ava Kison and Charlotte Akervik scored the first two goals and dominated the ice for the top-ranked defending champs.
The Ice Bears play a very disciplined game. They play their positions, move the puck well, and keep the area in front of freshman goalie Jenna Christophersen clear. Their only blemish in the first period came when Kison intercepted a break-out pass just inside the blue line and skated in toward the net. Kison got to the edge of the left face-off circle and roofed a shot over Christophersen for the only goal in the first period.
Christophersen stopped the other 7 shots in the period while Naomi Stow kept all 3 Bay Area shots out of the Stars net.
Most of the second period was spent in the Ice Bears zone, but the defense held. Christophersen stopped all 10 shots and Stow recorded all 4 saves at the other end. Toward the end of the period the speed of the Stars started to pay off as Kison drew a hooking penalty in the last minute.
The ensuing power play carried over into the third period and the Stars capitalized. Charlotte Akervik took a cross-ice pass from Lauren Carmody at the left point and skated into the zone to the same spot Kison scored from in the first. Akervik forced the puck through Christophersen to put the Stars up 2-0.
Three minutes later Cameron Carmody corralled the puck in the corner and saw Paige Rodriguez streaking down the slot and fed her the puck. The pass hit Rodriguez in stride and she sent a quick wrist shot into the net to expand the lead to 3-0.
The Ice Bears finally got on the board at 11:53 with a power play goal. Kalli Mikesch picked up a rebound in the slot while facing her own net, so she spun around and shot a puck the ended just inside the right post to make the final score 3-1.
Christophersen finished the game with 26 saves while Stow ended with 14.
