Vikes score 5 in third period to break open a tight game

The Milton Red Hawks opened up their home part of their schedule Monday night at the Mandt Center in Stoughton where they share ice with the Stoughton Vikings.

Thru two periods they shared the ice .

In the third period Stoughton Made themselves right at home, scoring 5 goals and took control cruising to a 7-2 Badger South Conference win.

The two teams were tied thru the first period after trading goals. Milton couldn't score on a major power play, but Stoughton was able to score just after a power playoff of their own. Jack Sundby sniped a low right circle shot past Milton goalie Luke Grote for a 1-0 lead. Milton matched that shortly after with Kyle Dehnert scoring for the 1-1 tie.

Once again each team scored single goals in the second period. Milton's Junior Onofre grabbed a loose puck and scored for a brief 2-1 Milton lead, but the Vikings tied it up with a power play goal by Dustin Woelke.

Milton starting the third period had Stoughton hemmed deep in their own zone early but couldn't get the lead goal. While holding the Red Hawks off the board the Vikings use that momentum to score the final 5 goals to win. Nolan Staplefeldt got the game winner when he got behind the defense and scored on a shot that went in off the elbow of the goal and in.

With the lead Stoughton then seemed to take all the momentum and scored goals in all kinds of fashion. Two were short handed, one empty net, a power play and an even strength goal. The Vikings Nolan Custer and Brody Hlavacek both scored 2 goals each of the final 4 goals for the final 7-2 score.

Milton Goalie Luke Grote made 30 saves in the game, while Carter Hellenbrand had 28. Milton has a quick turnaround with a game at Monona Grove on Tuesday, while Stoughton meets up with Madison Edgewood on December 15
