Wildcats start fast with five goals in first period

Forechecking relentlessly, the Wildcats of the University School co-op girls’ hockey team scored five goals in the first period then added four more in the third period as they skated to a 9-1 victory over the Brookfield Glacier in an Eastern Shores Conference game on Tuesday, November 27th at USM.

Gaby Turer scored three goals to lead the Wildcats, who fired 34 shots at Brookfield’s goalie Kristin Woodcock.  Jenna Klenz scored two goals for the victors, while Hannah Neudorfer, Karly Lamoreaux, Eiley Sheahan, and Emily Mueller each scored one goal.    Sami Stommel made 15 saves in net for the Wildcats, allowing only one shot, taken by Ellie Fuchs, to get by her in the third period.

"Nice job by the girls tonight,” said Dan Carey, USM’s head coach. “They forechecked hard and forced turnovers.  We have a lot of things to work on, but the effort level was there tonight."

Fierce forechecking led to the Wildcats’ first goal just 3:29 into the game. Lamoreaux out raced a Glacier defender for a loose puck in the Glacier’s left corner.  Lamoreaux passed it behind the net to Lexi Epperson.  In turn, Epperson passed it out front to Hannah Neudorfer who jammed it past Woodcock.

Less than a minute later, the Wildcats tallied their second goal.  Makinzie Youngblood chased a defender behind the Glaciers’ net.  Like she was stripping off old wall paper, Youngblood pulled the puck away from the defenseman’s stick.  She immediately backhanded it out front to Turer who one timed a shot into the net at 4:07.

The Wildcats made it 3-0 midway through the period.  Zoe Neudorfer pulled the puck from a scrum in the left corner of the Glaciers’ zone and slid it back toward defenseman Zoe Uihlein who had moved to the mid-boards.  A Glacier player tried to take it, but Uihlein batted it back to the point to Klenz.  Klenz then skated into the slot and fired a wrister past Woodcock at 7:43.

Turer scored her second goal of the game at 14:34.   Off a faceoff in the USM end, Klenz got the puck and ringed it behind the net to her defense partner, Maggie Meissner.  Meissner sent a breakout pass to Turer who was skating through the right circle.  Turer turned up ice and raced away. As she entered the Glacier’s zone, she pulled the puck around a defender and sped past.  She then rifled a shot from the slot to give the Wildcats a four-goal lead.

A power play added to Woodcock’s woes late in the opening frame.  As the Wildcats methodically moved the puck around the Glacier zone, Michaela Fritz passed it from the left point to Lexi Epperson on the near side boards.  Epperson passed it to Hannah Neudorfer in the left corner and took off for the net.  Neudrofer’s return pass skipped past Epperson, but it went to Klenz in the high slot.  Klenz fired it as Epperson’s skating screened Woodcock.  The puck flew into the net at 16:33.

Seeming to relax a bit in the second period, the Wildcats allowed the Glacier to have several odd-man rushes and to take eight shots, five more than Brookfield’s total in the first period.  Stommel withstood the pressure, however, and the period ended scoreless.

The Wildcats renewed their efforts in the third period.  Turer got them off to a good start in the period by scoring her third goal of the game just 4:07 into the period.  She knocked the puck away from a defenseman along the right mid-boards in the Glacier’s zone.  She raced to the loose puck and swooped along the bottom of the circle.  Skating through the slot, she lofted a back-hand shot past Woodcock to give USM a 6-0 lead.

Fuchs scored Brookfield’s goal at 6:20 when Zoe Sternberg stopped a defenseman behind the Wildcats’ net and passed the puck along the backboards to Fuchs.  Fuchs stepped out to the side of the net and forced the puck between Stommel and the post for the score.

The Wildcats put the clock on running time for the remainder of the game with a goal at 8:10. During a scramble for the puck near the crease, several players jammed at it.  Lamoreaux finally bopped it through an opening for the goal.  Lexi Epperson and Hannah Neudorfer were credited with assists on the play.

The home team increased its lead a few minutes later.  Defenseman Isabel Schmidt intercepted a Brookfield clearing attempt at the Glacier’s blue line.  She stepped in and fired a shot.  The puck skipped to Sheahan behind the net.  She gathered it up, stepped out front then whipped a shot past Woodcock at 10:50.

The Wildcats finished the evening’s scoring at 12:50. Mueller intercepted a pass near the Brookfield blue line.  She skated between two defenders, moved in, and backhanded the puck into the net to score her first varsity goal for the Wildcats.

The loss dropped Brookfield’s record to 0-5 and 0-3 in the Eastern Shores Conference.  The Glacier plays the Lakeshore Lightning in an Eastern Shores Conference game at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 30th at the Ozaukee Ice Arena in Cedarburg.

USM is now 3-1 and 1-0 in the Eastern Shores Conference.  The Wildcats play the Rock County Fury in a non-conference game at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 1st at USM.
