Central Wisconsin dominates in a 3-1 win

The Central Wisconsin Storm scored once in each period, and once at each strength to take a 3-1 win over the Wisconsin Valley Union on Tuesday night at the Greenheck Field House. The Storm scored at even strength in the first, added a power play goal in the second, and topped it off with a short-handed goal in the third period.

Union head coach Dan Bauer said his team lost a lot from last year, “We have a lot of holes to fill, and I don’t know if we are quite there yet. We are going to have to rely on Pistol (Cowden – goalie) tonight.”

I did not look promising for WVU from the start. CWS wasted no time in scoring their first goal just 45 seconds into the game. Lauren Wincensten took a pass from Eden Gruber and fired a one-time from the slot to open the scoring. Kiley Hahner was credited with the second assist.

Even though the puck spent most of the first period in their own zone, the Union defenders did a good job of limiting scoring chances by blocking shots, clearing rebounds, and keeping the area in front of Cowden clean.

Cowden stopped seven shots in the first period while Sydney Weiland was only called upon to stop one shot in front of the Storm net.

The Storm turned up the heat in the second period putting 19 shots on net, versus 5 shots for the Union. One of those 19 shots got through towards the tail end of a 5 on 3 power play. The first penalty had just expired when Kassidy Oliva made a pass from behind the net to Trinity Foster in the low slot. Foster wasted no time in firing the puck under Cowden with just under two minutes left in the second period.

Kayla Piskula added a short-handed goal for the Storm when she slapped in a loose puck from the side of the net at 3:08 to make it 3-0. Sarah Croker had the assist.

Down 3-0 with less than 4 minutes to go, Union pulled their goalie for a face-off in the Storm zone. It took them but 8 seconds to score as Cadie Ash fired a shot from the point that hit traffic in from of the net and ricocheted over Weiland to make it 3-1. Leah Gruen had the assist on the goal.

Cowden was in and out of the net for the final minutes, but there would be no more scoring.  Cowden ended the night with 37 saves and Weiland with 14.
