Wildcats defeat Waunakee and Waupun for title

It was a great weekend of hockey for the University School boys’ hockey team. The Wildcats seized the day on Friday, November 23rd then again on Saturday, November 24th. They outscored their two opponents 13-4 and won the annual Paul Meyer Memorial Hockey Tournament at USM.

USM whipped Waunakee, 6-1 on Friday night then won the tournament’s championship by winning over Waupun, 7-3, Saturday night.

The Wildcats came out firing against Waunakee. They outshot the Warriors 48-7 in the contest.

Tyler Herzberg and Sterling Cooke each scored a goal in the first five minutes to get USM started on their winning rout.

In the second period, Herzberg scored another goal, Carson Mogush scored two goals and Noah Eghbali and Jacob Como each tallied one allowing the Wildcats to put the clock on running time.  Jacob Werlein scored Waunkee’s lone goal late in the third period.

Frank Fee was the winning goaltender for the Wildcats, making 6 saves. Hunter Beck was far busier in the other end of the rink.  Beck made 42 saves for Waunakee.

After the win, Jason Woods, USM’s head coach, commented on the win, “Tonight was a solid win for us to start the Paul Meyer Memorial Tournament. Our first two periods were fast and focused.  The third period was a little sloppy, and we will look to clean that up before the game against Waupun. But all in all, it was a solid performance. Lots of contributions from a lot of spots up and down the lineup.  Thirteen players had a point tonight.  That says a lot.”

The Wildcats used special team play to beat Waupun in the tournament’s championship clash.

WiPH Game Summaries

USM scored two goals on the power play and three more goals while penalty killing.  They took 62 shots at Waupun’s goalie Tyler Fromholz in the game.  Waupun took a total of 14.  Frank Fee made 10 saves for USM and allowed 2 goals in the first two periods.  Patrick Kelly took over in the third period and made 1 save and surrendered 1 goal.  Carter Schramm had a hat trick for all of Waupun’s three goals.  Tyler Herzberg had a hat trick for the victorious Wildcats.

Despite the shot discrepancy, the Warriors scored first.  At the USM blue line, defenseman Connor McLinn stopped a Wildcat clearing pass and fired a shot at Fee.  The rebound bounced out front and Schramm shoveled a backhander into the net at 13:16.

USM tied the score less than a minute later while on a power play. Blake Carey got the puck on the right sideboards and passed it to Herzberg at the point.  Herzberg passed it back.  Carey then saw Robby Newton unmarked in the slot and put his pass on Newton’s tape.  Newton one-timed a shot into the net at 14:05.

Carey scored a short-handed goal at 2:05 of the second period to give the Wildcats a lead that they would not surrender for the remainder of the game.  He started the play by taking a breakout pass from Alex Thundercloud along the mid-boards in the USM end. He pushed the puck up the boards to Newton who was fleeing the zone.  Carey sped into the play, creating a two-on-one.  As Newton entered the right circle in the Waupun end, he passed the puck to Carey who was charging down the slot like a runaway train.  Carey quickly shot the puck into the net.

USM scored another short-handed goal less than two minutes later.  In the USM end, Mann blocked a shot from the point then passed the puck to Herzberg who sped out of the zone on a one-on-one.   As he neared the Waupun net, Herzberg dipped his shoulder to fend off the defender, swept into the crease, and slid the puck past Fromholz at 3:51.

Schramm scored Waupun’s second goal at 9:52 of the period.  Malachi Bucholz out hustled a USM defender as the two chased a puck through center ice and down toward the left corner in the USM end.  Bucholz knocked the puck behind the net and his brother Jarrett Bucholz got and passed it to Schramm in the right circle.  Schramm took it on his backhand and immediately shot the puck past Fee.

USM used a power play goal to make the score 4-2.  On a give-and-go play in the Waupun zone, Herzberg dashed in from the right point and received a pass from Carey on the side boards.  Herzbeg fired a shot. The puck hit Fromholz’s pads and bounced to the left.  Mann was there and darted a shot into the net at 2:13.

The Wildcats scored their next goal early in the third period.  On a three-on-one break, Thundercloud skated the puck into the slot of the Waupun end then backhanded a pass to Cooke.  Cooke rifled a shot into the net at 5:13.

The Wildcats took a 6-2 lead at 12:20 with another short-handed goal.  Thundercloud collected a loose puck in the USM end and skated it out of the zone.  In center ice, he passed it to Mann who skated into the Waupun end along the right boards.  Mann passed it to Herzberg in the slot.  Herzberg stickhandled then turned and wired a shot into the net.

Schramm scored his third goal of the game at 13:30. In the Waupun end, he knocked the puck away from a USM defenseman.  It bounced to Malachi Bucholz who took off on a two-on-one break with Schramm.  As he skated down the left side into the USM end, Bucholz centered the puck to Schramm who one-timed a shot past Kelly.

The Wildcats finished the evening’s scoring at 15:00.  Casey Roepke skated the puck across the Waupun blue line and took a slap shot at the net.  He followed his shot and got the rebound in the left corner.  He passed it to Mann in the slot.  Mann turned and passed it to Herberg near the goalpost and Herzberg jammed it into the net.

After the game, Woods noted, “Not the cleanest game we ever had, but we got the job done. Expectations are high, and we need to compete at those expectation levels.  Still, seven goals, three short-handed, is something to be proud of.  Congrats to the team on the victory and the tournament championship. Back to work Monday.”

USM is 3-0 and 0-0 in the Classic Eight Conference.  The Wildcats play D.C. Everest in a non-conference game at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 30th at USM.
