Superior uses strong third to defeat ECM

Spartans score three in final period for 6-2 win

Cayden Laurvick scored twice and Gunnar Hansen had three helpers to lead Superior to a 6-2 win over host Eau Claire Memorial in the Bryant Heating and Cooling Old Abe Hockey Tournament Saturday morning/afternoon at Eau Claire Hobbs Ice Arena.

After a scoreless first in which both teams had 11 shots on goal, the teams combined for five goals in the middle period.

Superior scored the first three goals in a span of five and one-half minutes to cruise to a 3-0 lead.

Ian Johnson scored from the low left side at 2:07 with an assist from Jakob Holmlund to make it 1-0.

Less than a minute later, Grant Sorensen scored on a 2-on-1 to double the lead to 2-0. Hansen and Laurvick helped out on the play.

After a couple missed chances by ECM in the middle of the period, the Spartans got a goal from Max Curtis when he scored on a pass from behind the net by Taylor Burger with just over nine minutes left.

Not to be outdone, the Old Abes scored twice in three minutes to cut the deficit to one goal. 

Andrew Roberts scored on an assist from Jonah Wiggins in the middle of the period to cut the lead to 3-1, and then Austin Karnitz skated in, crossed over to the left side and pitchforked the puck over the right shoulder of Superior goalie Dayton Podvin to make it a one-goal game. Easton Tok had an assist on the play.

The period ended with the 3-2 Superior lead. Podvin stopped six shots, while Joe Berg made 12 saves for ECM.

The final stanza was all Souptown.

Laurvick scored on a rebound just 55 seconds in, with assists to Hansen and Sorensen.

Five minutes later, Laurvick scored on the power play, with assists to Hansen and Derrick Mattson to make it 5-2.

Burger would finish off the scoring with a goal at the 9:37 mark, assisted by Johnson and Curtis.

Podvin had five stops in the period for a game total of 22. For ECM, Berg (6) and freshman Kyler Strenke (4) combined for a period total of 10. Berg would finish with 29 saves for ECM.
