Poshak scores a pair in 5-0 win

The Notre Dame Academy Tritons scored three times in the first six minutes of final period and coasted to a 5-0 win over Wausau West in the title game of the Bryant Heating and Cooling Old Abe Hockey Tournament.

The Tritons tallied three power play goals in a game where West had 10 penalties. The previous night, Superior committed a spate of penalties in a 4-3 West victory.

West coach BJ Brandt commented, 'Now I know how Superior felt last night.'

NDA started off fast, scoring 46 seconds into the contest. Eli Canadeo fired a shot on the ice from the right circle that somehow slid through a forest of legs for the 1-0 lead. Callan Budinger and Brendan Poshak had helpers on the play.

West killed off two penalties in the middle of the period--including a five-minute major--and then later, NDA did the same on a double minor. The period would end with NDA goalie Bo Buckley stopping six shots, while West freshman Adam Prokop--making his first varsity start--made seven saves in the period.

The second period saw two West penalties with just over ten minutes left, giving NDA a 5-on-3 for 93 seconds. As the first penalty expired, West's Lucas Langlois came out of the box only the find the puck a few feet in front of him. He gathered in it and made a move on Buckley, only to have the Triton goalie stick the shot away.

Perhaps they were feeling in the Christmas mood, so West gave the Tritons another 5-on-3, this time for a full two minutes, with just over five minutes left in the period.

And after an ill-timed line change, West found themselves on the short end of a 4-on-1 bustout. The Tritons initial shot was stopped, but Sawyer Scholl tapped in the carom to give Notre Dame a 2-0 lead with four minutes left in the middle stanza. Poshak and Jacob Conrad earned assists on the scoring play.

A West penalty with 19 seconds left would come into play in the third, but for now, Buckley stopped seven shots in the period, while Prokop made 11 stops.

WiPH Game Summaries

Early in the last stanza, Poshak rushed down the right side and fired an on-ice shot from the low right circle that beat the West goalie 44 seconds in for the power play score. Scholl assisted on the score that made the score 3-0.

After a West major penalty and a Notre Dame penalty created a 4-on-4, Budinger scored to give NDA a 4-0 lead with 13:15 left to play. Scholl and Conrad earned helpers on the play.

Thirty seconds later, West's Marc Sippel had the puck behind the net with a chance for a wrap-around goal, but Buckley made a diving stop to keep West frustrated and off the scoreboard.

Poshak would tack on the final tally when he knocked home a long rebound from the mid-slot to make it 5-0 with just over 11 minutes left. Josh DeLange got an assist on the play.

The teams would exchange penalties late in the period but neither would score as the Tritons skated off with the Bryant Heating and Cooling trophy.

Buckley stopped seven shots and finished with a 20-save shutout for NDA. Prokop made 30 saves in his debut and acquitted himself well, falling victim to a better team on this afternoon.
