Maslonka and Einbeck score twice in the victory

The Rock County Fury opened up its season Saturday hosting the Brookfield Glacier. The Glacier came into the game looking for some scoring help, as leading scorer Hadley Malcolmson was out of the lineup with a wrist injury. Rock County was looking to replace seven seniors with a heavy underclassmen squad.

Rock County scored six unanswered goals before the Glacier scored in the final second of the game for a 6-1 Fury win in Beloit.

"We're definitely happy with how things were going for us," said Fury head coach Luke Steuer. "We made a lot of adjustments throughout the game and the girls were able to adjust and move forward."

Rock County lead 2-0 after the first period with goals by Sara Loerke. Loerke was able to get off a mid-slot slap shot. Mya Maslonka scored the  second goal. Maslonka picked up  the puck by the right corner, went thru traffic and shot a wrist shot that eluded Glacier goalie Kristin Woodcock.

The second period had Brookfield playing a better game than the first period but it was Maslonka scoring again. She came off the right wall and cut thru the circle and scored on a backhander for the lone goal of the period for a 3-0 lead after two periods.

Maslonka, who played AAA hockey last season, was happy to contribute right away. "Yes for sure," she said with a big smile. "I missed my friends and the environment in school."

In the third period, the Fury put the game out of reach. Anika Einbeck combined on the fourth goal with Haley Knauf assisting on the wraparound goal. Einbeck scored again on a rebound for the fifth goal and Sara Nerad finished off the Fury scoring.

Fury freshman goalie Olivia Cronin was within one second of a shutout in her varsity debut but Brookfield scored in the final second on a goal by Zoe Sternberg, with a helper from Ellie Fuchs.

Cronin finished with 16 saves, while Brookfield goalie Kristin Woodcock stopped 44 shots.
