New coach to lead young hockey squad

Experienced youth coach takes over Milton Red Hawk job

Even though football season is just around the corner, when hockey comes around, the Milton boys will have a new leader at the helm. Steve Zartman is the new man in town.

Zartman — who currently lives in Edgerton with his wife Shelly, boys Brock, 18, and Ben, 17 and chocolate lab puppy Dudley — works at Franklin Middle School in Janesville as an eighth grade biology teacher.

But Zartman is no stranger to coaching.

“In the past 18 years I’ve coached over 60 athletic teams, everything from varsity football, track, golf and basketball to youth baseball and hockey,” he said. “My on-ice experience includes over a decade coaching and a lifetime of playing hockey. The bulk of my coaching took place in the Janesville youth program, working every age group from mites to bantams. I am also a Level III certified official with USA Hockey.”

Zartman — who enjoys running and gardening in his spare time — said it had been his dream job to become a head varsity hockey coach.
