Mention hockey in July, and some folks might tell you to find some shade. You’re baked, right?

Not hardly.

The Midsummer Meltdown high school girls hockey tournament will give local athletes and hockey fans a way to beat the heat this weekend for the third year in a row.

Starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the OmniCenter, the tournament will feature six teams from across the state composed of skaters ranging from incoming high school freshmen to seniors. Besides giving athletes the opportunity to practice their winter sport in the summer, Onalaska High School girls hockey coach and tournament co-coordinator Mark Thorn hopes it can serve other purposes.
