Recruiting trail a critical part of a college hockey program

Traveling all over God's creation to find talent takes patience, energy

The college hockey recruiting trail never ends and has taken coaches far and wide over the years.

Although both St. Lawrence University and Clarkson have landed many of their men’s hockey recruits for next season, they are still on the lookout for players. And in their travels, coaches have not only ventured across North America in the United States and Canada, but overseas as well, to Europe and even on occasion, Asia.

St. Lawrence coach and former Clarkson coach Mark Morris recalled one such journey to northern Canada when he was scouting a young defenseman named Willie Mitchell back when Morris was the Golden Knights’ head coach.

“We got a lead on Willie Mitchell and they wanted me to see him play in the playoffs,” Morris said. “I had never been to Saskatchewan and you can drive for six or seven hours and never see a house. It’s the flattest, most boring ride you’ve ever seen and I don’t know if I’ve ever seen more deer then you do out on the prairies.”
