Improved play in third period leads to rout

The TW HP18 game was closer than it should've been in Day 2 action at the Minnesota Showcase.

Their opponent Massachusetts has yet to win a game in this event over the years and trailed TW 3-2 after two periods.

So was this THE game they finally break thru ?

Nope, not today.

TW put up a whopping seven goals in the third period and got the 10-2 win in pool play.

TW lead after the first period on a pair of Jake Schmaltz goals. He scored just under two minutes in when he scored on a loose puck battle in front.

The second goal of the period came off a shorthanded goal by Andrew Malek.

Massachusetts got one back on a goal by Jacob Mauro who scored from the slot in front of the net on a centering pass. The period looked like it was gonna end 2-1 but Jake Schmaltz was able to corral a loose puck in front and scored with 2 seconds left in the period.

The second period had Massachusetts score the lone goal of the period. Jake Barcelou was able to take a pass behind the TW defense and score on TW goalie Andrew Cohen.

Massachusetts played well in the second period and had chances to get it tied going into second intermission but had a one goal deficit at 3-2 with the third period coming up.

TW came out and was able to get some power play time and looked dominant scoring three goals in 30 seconds for a 6-2 lead essentially putting the game away and leading to a 10-2 win in pool play.

TW skaters Jake Schmaltz and Bennett Halbleib each had four points in the game and Andrew Malek finished with a hat trick. Andrew Cohen finished with 15 saves. TW Juniors now play the Michigan Seniors on Saturday afternoon.
