Three straight goals give Selects enough for win

Emma Serres scored three consecutive goals—a natural hat trick, as some would say—to lead the U19 WI Selects to a 4-3 victory over the North Virginia Ice Dogs Sunday morning in Marlborough in the USA Hockey Nationals quarterfinals.

Baileigh Johnson scored less than two minutes in to give the Selects a 1-0 lead. Morgan Treml earned the first of her three assists on the scoring play.

The Ice Dogs got a goal by Lillian Harp in the middle of the first to time the game. Haley Battles scored almost exactly one period later to give the Virginia team a 2-1 lead before Serres took over. The Arrowhead senior scored a couple minutes later on an assist from Michaela Fritz to tie the game, which would stand for the balance of the period.

Then, with help from Treml, Serres scored two more times early and late in the third to give the Selects a 4-2 lead.

Battles fought hard for another Ice Dogs goal with just over two minutes left to make it 4-3, but that would be the best the southern team could do, as the Selects moved to the semis Sunday night.

Ivy Shonka stopped 22 shots in the contest.

The Selects will play the East Coast Wizards in the semi-final round at 6:00pm CT.
