Two players score in SO for the Selects

In a game that was even all the way through score wise, the Wisconsin Selects put more pucks in the net in a shootout and earned a hard-fought 4-3 win over South Dakota Thursday at the New England Sports Center.

The Selects got shootout goals from Zoe Sternberg (Brookfield Glacier) and Avrey Simonson (Wis Valley Union) for the win.

Lizzie Patton (Badger Lightning)  put the Selects ahead midway through the first period with assists to Michaela Fritz (USM) and Morgan Treml (Fox Cities Stars) before SD tied the game just over a minute later on a goal by Kamryn Hayhurst.

That's how the period ended.

Two minutes into the middle stanza, Maike Zipp (Warbirds/Beaver Dam) scored on the power play to put the Selects up 2-1. Sternberg and Sarah Marvin (Appleton United) earned helpers on the play.

Jadyn Peterson tied the game with just under five minutes left in the period to knot the contest at two.

South Dakota finally got the lead six minutes into the third period on Kaitlyn Kunkel's scoring effort.

But the Selects would come back to tie it on Sternberg's goal with 2:31 left in regulation. Abby Comar (Bay Area) got credit for the assist.

Five minutes of extra period hockey proved nothing and the game went to a shootout.

While Sternberg and Simonson provided the offensive heroics, goalie Emily Nettesheim (Arrowhead) stood on her head, stopping all four shootout attempts in addition to her 16 stops in the 56 minutes of play.

NOTE: I was informed that the shots were reversed on the online scoresheet. Shots were 41-19 in favor of the Selects.
