Selects U16 team made it to National semi last year

Wisconsin Selects Girls U19 Tier II team is headed to USA Hockey Nationals in Marlborough, MA.   In only their second year in existence, the Wisconsin Selects are sending a team to Nationals for the second time. Last year’s U16 team made it all the way to the Semi-finals, losing 2-0 to the Vermont Shamrocks. This is the first year for a Selects U19 team and about a third of the team are returning players from last year’s U16 squad.

The Selects are a “before and after” team, composed of some of the top players in the state, coming from the following high school programs: Bay Area Ice Bears, University School Milwaukee, Fox Cities Stars, Appleton United, Warbirds, Cap City Cougars, Viroqua Blackhawks, Brookfield Glacier, Arrowhead Warhawks, St Croix Valley Fusion, Lakeland Thunderbirds, WI Valley Union, Black River Falls, Onalaska and Badger Lightening.

Their overall record is 17-8 and they are ranked 9th nationally.  The team went undefeated at the Central District Playoffs, by a combined score of 13-3.  The Selects pulled a tough bracket at Nationals, facing Team South Dakota (21st), Boston Shamrocks (4th), and Alaska All-Stars (3rd) in pool play.

The Selects are coached by Sarah Krebs, Steve Kirley, and Dave Fritz.

Assistant Coach Steve Kirley, who was recently inducted into the WHCA Hall of Fame, says this about the team, “We play four lines and three pairs of defense just like a big-time college program.  Our head coach, Sarah Krebs, is a Wisconsinite who played D1 hockey at Mercyhurst.  She passes on her wealth of experience to our players.  This group competes hard, is fun to watch, and has a blast together.”
