Stowe shines at girls' junior/senior festival

ECA star tallies tourney-leading 12 points

Abigail Stowe demonstrated once again why she is Wisconsin’s Miss Hockey by leading Section one to an undefeated weekend at the Junior/Senior Festival in Chippewa Falls this past weekend.  Stowe scored nine goals and added three assists in a dominating performance against some of states best upperclassmen.  Hayward’s Sarah Pearson chipped in with 4 goals & a pair of assists to help Section One.  Sydney McKersie (Metro Lynx) stopped 38 of 43 shots & Taylor Thornton (Cap City) stopped 26 of 29 in goal for the tournament champs.

Other top performers from the tournament included goalies Chloe Westberg (CW Storm) with 45 saves on 48 shots, Gwen Parker (Metro Lynx) 30 saves on 32 shots & Ivy Shonka (Viroqua) with 27 saves on 29 shots, Alyssa Heim (Warbirds) 2 goals, 3 assists; Hannah Gold (USM) 2 goals, 2 assists, Mary Kremer (Arrowhead) 2 goals, 2 assists, Khloe Spors (Black River Falls) 4 goals; and Markie Ash (WV Union) 4 assists.   

The third annual tournament featured four teams and sixty-six juniors & seniors from across the state.  The tournament is used as part of the tryout process to select teams to represent Wisconsin at the NIT & America’s Showcase.  Coaches for the tournament included Jeff Thornton (Cap City), Tony Menard (CFM), Duane Woeshnick (Warbirds/BD), Matt Cranston (St. Croix Valley) and Dan Bauer (WV Union).

The weekend event is an opportunity for seniors to get back on the ice again with teammates & friends from around the state.  Sponsored in part by the Girl’s Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association it has become a popular & enjoyable event for players, parents & coaches.


GAME SUMMARIES

Superior’s Alee Mil+inkovich stole a puck & sniped a goal just inside the post to break a 1-1 second period tie.  Sarah Pearson added a pair of third period goals as Section One rolled to a 5-1 win.  McKersie & Thornton combined to stop 15 shots.  Stowe had a goal & an assist.

Section Three  5  Section Four  2

Khloe Spors scored a pair of second period goals as Section Three built a 3-0 lead.  Mary Kremer, who is headed to UW-Stevens Point next year, scored on a shorthanded breakaway to get Section Four on the board.  Spors completed her hat trick with just seven seconds left in the period to give Section Three a 4-1 lead.  The teams exchanged third period goals.

Future UW-River Falls Falcon, Abigail Stowe opened the scoring with a pair of first period goals to give Section One a 2-0 lead.  Section Four came roaring back with three straight goals by Alyssa Heim (Warbirds), Zoe Sternberg (Brookfield) & Maike Zipp (Warbirds) to take a 3-2 lead.  Then came the Stowe shoe as the Eau Claire senior scored 4 times in the final period enroute to a 7-3 win.

Saturday’s action finished with a 2-1 win by Section Two.  Fox Cities’ Lauryn Hull tipped in a Markie Ash shot, who will play golf for UW-Stout next fall, to open the scoring.  Montana Cruz (Cap City) fired home a point shot to tie the game at 1-1.  CW Storm’s Kenna Bailey redirected a pass from Jamie Slattery (WV Union) midway through the second period for the game winner.   Medford’s Liz Brandner & Chloe Westberg (CW Storm) combined to make 31 saves.

Zoe Sternberg deflected a pass to give Section Four a 1-0 lead.  Morgan Tremi (Fox Cities) tied it on an end to end rush.  Emma Kysely (CW Storm) buried a pretty 2 on 1 pass from Markie Ash for a 2-1 Section Two lead.  Drew Deanovich (Warbirds) tied it at 2-2.  Section Four broke the game open with three straight third period goals, including a pair by USM’s Hannah Gold.  Avrey Simonson (WV Union), who will head to Winona to play for St. Mary’s next season, scored a late goal with the goalie pulled.  Section Two finished with a 31-23 shots on goal advantage.

Sarah Pearson scored a pair of first period goals to give Section One a 2-1 lead.  Stowe increased the lead to 3-1.  Ally Conybear (Metro Lynx) on the powerplay & Collen Milligan (Cap City) tied it at 3-3.  St. Croix Valley’s Gabrielle Bresina made a great individual effort to split the defensemen & score to give Section One a 4-3 lead.  Stowe went under the bar from bottom on the right circle for a 5-3 lead.  Carson Sheridan’s shot to the far pad came out perfectly for Spors & she buried the rebound to make it a one goal game.  McKersie, who will stop pucks as a UW-Eau Claire Blugold next year, stopped a breakaway with 45 seconds remaining to preserve the win & the undefeated tournament for Section One.
