Third straight double OT game, but DCE falls

The Waukesha Wings and DC Everest Evergreens met up in the final Quarterfinal game of the day. DC Everest was making their first ever trip to State, while Waukesha was making their third straight after last years runnerup finish.

DC came out and got he only goal of the first period which saw them show no sign of jitters. They scored the only goal of the first period on a goal by Ryan Begley who beat Wings goalie Garrett Larson low glove for the 1-0 lead. DC almost went up by one more after the goal on the power play when Begley missed a wide open net and hit the post.

The early second period saw Waukesha tie it when a DC defenseman tried to hold the puck in at the point but missed. Quickly two Waukesha players, Joziah Dietrich and Griffin Nickerson were headed on a odd man rush with Nickerson finishing for a tie early in the second period.

Waukesha started the third period with just over a minute of power play time, but weren't able to score. But the midpoint of the third saw the Wings get whistled for a pair of penalties and on a two man advantage they got a rebound goal from Freshman Davis Hackbarth with 7:40 left in the game.

But Waukesha on their own power play got the game tied on a mid slot one timer by Griffin Nickerson set up by Trenton Tucker with 4:52 left.

The Wings were able to get another power play chance with over 2 minutes left but DC goalie Michael Janke was up to the onslaught of pucks to keep it tied and force overtime.

Both teams in the first overtime survived breakaways by the others. Waukesha kept pressure on most of the period but still couldn't get the winner thru the first overtime.

In the second overtime the refs reviewed early on if Everest scored on a wrap around goal. Larson was shown to make the slimmest of margins save. One minute later Wings defenseman Kevin Broda was able to get the edge on a defender along the boards. once he did he cut towards the net and was able to get the puck past DC goalie Michael Janke for the final goal of the game,

Waukesha moved on to play Eau Claire Memorial now in the Evening semifinal Friday. DC Everest who played three straight double overtime games sees their season end.
