three goals in third sends Wings to third straight trip to Madison

The Waukesha Wings found them in a similar situation earlier in the season.

Tied in the Third period with Marquette.

But this time was different. And the stakes higher.

The Wings used a pair of late goals from Kevin Broda,  and a empty netter by Joziah Dietrich to win the Section 7 championship by a 5-2 score.

The Wings have now won Section 7 three straight seasons and move on to the WIAA State Tournament Thursday in Madison.

The game came down to the final 34 minutes after a scoreless opening period which Marquette had 3 power play opportunities but nothing to show.

Marquette was able to open up the scoring in the second by scoring on a delayed penalty call. George Schelble scored during the call and Marquette had the 1-0 lead.

Waukesha came back about 5 minutes later on the power play and scored to tie it at 1. Trenton Tucker got off a shot from the right circle and on the way to the net Griffin Nickerson was able to tip it past Marquette goalie Zach Schmidt for the tie score.

Almost 30 seconds later Marquette was whistled for another penalty putting Waukesha back on the man advantage. And once again the Wings cashed in on a goal by Garrett Wilderman. His shot from the right side seemed to beat Schmidt short side and Waukesha took a 2-1 lead to the second intermission.

Marquette early in the third period got a wrap around chance and somehow the puck squirted by Garrett Larson for a 2-2 game.

So with under 10 minutes to go the whistle blew and a pair of penalties were handed out. One to Waukesha for roughing and one to Marquette for a check from behind 5 minute major. so that being handed out Waukesha would get a 3 minute power play, setting up Broda's 2 goals and Dietrich's empty netter for the 5-2 win.

In the win Garrett Wilderman had a 3 point game along with Kevin Broda.

Final saves were 29 saves for Zach Schmidt, and 22 for Garrett Larson. Marquette finished the season 14-8-2, while Waukesha plays on with a 17-4-3 record and a trip to Madison next week.
