Tanner Reany stellar in 49 save effort in 2-1 loss to DCE

Tanner Reany made glove saves, pad saves, stick saves and pretty much stood on his head to frustrate DC Everest Thursday night in Sectional 3 action at the Greenheck Fieldhouse, but the Evergreens were able to slip two pucks past him on the way to a 2-1 victory over visiting Wisconsin Rapids.

In the third match this year between the Wisconsin Valley Conference foes, DCE scored early in the first period to grab a 1-0 lead. Matt Lukasik put the puck past the WR goalie, with assists to Ben Weller and J.J. Berdal, at the 3:20 mark of the opening stanza.

A couple minutes later, Dylan Schiro and Ben Peloquin came in for DCE on a 2-on-1 bustout, but Reany rejected the shot to keep the contest at 1-0.

The Evergreens had half of a power play chance to end the period, but the scoreboard still showed 1-0 as the teams skated off. Reany stopped 22 shots in the period, while opposing netminder Michael Janke had three saves for DCE.

The Evergreens senior goalie was able to flash his skills six minutes into the second period, when he turned aside a 2-on-goalie breakout for Rapids.

As the clock ticked down to six minutes left, DCE's Brendan Hoover was whistled for a CFB, while the 'checkee,' Austin Reimer, was assessed an unsportsmanlike infraction.

Neither team was able to score during the two minutes of 4-on-4 action, but the squad that was skating short-handed was able to capitalize just before the DCE five minute major expired.

After a Rapids turnover in the NZ, the Evergreens sent two skaters in on Reany. The initial shot went awry, but Ty Tretter gathered the rebound and stuffed it past the Rapids goalie to give the Evergreens a 2-0 lead for a short-handed unassisted goal.

That's how the period ended, with Reany adding 16 saves to his total. Janke stopped four shots for DCE.

WiPH Game Summaries

Now if you believe Rapids coach Pat McDonald and his 'two-goal lead is the worst lead in hockey' theory, the Red Raiders had the home team right where they wanted them to begin the final period.

And it started look like the crew in red—once anointed as the 'Red Army' by Onalaska coach Tim Ebner—was going to rally as Nick Campbell dallied behind the DCE defense and gathered up a long, lead feed from Colin Brey before scoring a deking goal on Janke to cut the lead in half.

The goal that came with over 13 minutes left would be the last tally of the game, much to the disappointment of the visiting squad.

An apparent Everest goal was waved off with 1:43 left as the net had come off its moorings. Rapids then called a timeout to discuss late-game strategy.

Reany came off for an extra skater with under a minute left, but the horn sounded on a 2-1 DCE victory.

Reany stopped 11 pucks in the period to finish with 49 in the contest, while Janke had zero in the period to end with seven overall.

Rapids finishes its season with a mark of 12-12-1.

Everest (17-6-2), seeded fourth in Sectional 3, will take on #1 Wausau West in semifinal action at Marathon Park next Tuesday.
