Springs will face Waupun in Badgerland Tournament Final

It was 54 plus minutes of tight checking all out hockey. An incredible game that has now become commonplace during the Badgerland Tournament. In the end it was Springs that found the back of the net with 4:50 minutes remaining in overtime to take down #6 Neenah and advance to the Badgerland Championship game Saturday at 4 pm. The victory over Neenah was the second since January 23rd for the young and scrappy Ledger team.

The game was a tight contest all the way through with no scoring for either team the first two periods. Both goalies were on their games with Preston Long and Colin Ahern denying any and all opportunities that each team could generate.

Finally with 6:52 remaining in the 3rd period Neenah broke the seal with Thomas Priest sneaking a puck by Ahern. Alec Elkin assisted on the play.  The intensity only seemed to increase for the last 5 minutes for both teams and with 3:41 remaining Springs got the equalizer on a great shot from the point by freshman Noah Pickart. Connor McLaughlin and Jack Sabel assisted on the play.

Springs was called for an interference penalty with 1:03 left in the 3rd and it appeared this was going to be the break that Neenah needed. But the Ledgers would not yield.

After an incredible penalty kill by the Ledgers that carried into the OT session it was time for the Ledgers to go! The deciding goal came on a fantastic play by sophomore Mitch Huettl as he hustled to a 50-50 play behind the Neenah net and was able to apply a great hit on the Rockets defender dislodging the puck. Huettl then centered it to a streaking Jack Sabel who blasted a slap shot on the net. After a mad dash for the rebound it was Huettl that went to the net and would not be denied as he slid the puck through several Neenah players and into the back of the net for the game winner. Jack Sabel and Levi Poss assisted on the goal.

Both goalies were outstanding as Preston Long finished with 26 saves while Colin Ahern turned back 29 of 30 shots.

Springs will play Waupun today at 4:00 pm in the championship game while Neenah will take on Fox Cities at 1:30 pm in the 3rd place game.
