Brother Rice skates to 1-0 win over Notre Dame

Tritons hit two pipes but get no goals in close loss

Brother Rice and Notre Dame Academy met for the third time over the past four years in the annual MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase Friday evening at the Kennedy Recreation Center in Trenton.

Each of their previous two games ended in a 1-0 Rice victory. Incredibly, the teams played to the same result this year.

Rice's talented junior defense Ethan Nystrom netted a goal late in the second period which stood up as the game winner. 

"I know we've had great games and we've had close games in the past," said Brother Rice's second-year head coach Ken Chaput, whose team hiked its overall record to 9-8-1-1. "Both coaches were talking and we like playing each other. It's fun hockey. It's fast hockey. It's not usually chippy, it's just good, old-fashion up-and-down play.

"I wouldn't say I was expecting another low-scoring game, but I was expecting a tight game if both teams played hard," he said. "We've had our ups-and-downs as of late, but we played well tonight and that was good to see."
