Wildcats outshoot AU 51-14

The University School boys’ hockey team defeated Appleton United 4-0 in a non-conference game on Saturday, January 20th at USM.

After the Wildcats had won each of their previous three games by a score of 9-0, USM’s head coach Jason Woods was less sanguine about Saturday’s game than he might have been, “I thought tonight we did just enough to get the job done.  Not quite as crisp as we had been but still pretty good.  Our defense has risen to the occasion, and Patrick Kelly has really solidified the goalie position. He has been absolutely outstanding every chance he has gotten. Now we put the focus squarely on the Homestead game Tuesday.  We are excited to have that opportunity.”

Appleton was clearly outmatched.  The Wildcats fired 51 shots at Appleton’s goalie Gage Olson.  Olson played gamely, stopping 47 of USM’s attempts.  Carson Mogush put two shots past Olson while Robby Newton and Tyler Herzberg scored a goal apiece for the victorious home squad.  Patrick Kelly, USM’s goaltender, was not severely tested.  He made 14 saves in earning the shutout.

The Wildcats aimed 18 shots on net in the opening period and Mogush scored on one of those shots. Positioned at the post, he received a crossing passing from Christian Blomquist and immediately smashed the puck inside the post at 14:05. Alex Thundercloud also had an assist on the play.

The USM players continued their shooting onslaught in the second period, taking 21 during the frame.  Newton put one of those shots into the net at 7:37.  After TJ Fenton fired a puck at the Appleton net, Blake Carey got it behind the net.  He rifled a pass to Newton who was all alone in the high slot.  Newton fired and scored, giving USM a 2-0 lead.

Mogush scored his second goal of the game late in the second period.  Herzberg send a pass to Ethan Mann on the right boards.  Mann spotted Mogush out front and passed the puck to him.  Mogush quickly one-timed a shot into the net behind Olson at 14:34.

Herzberg finished the game’s scoring at 9:58 of the third period off of passes by Carey and Newton.

Appleton is now 6-11-1.  The team takes on Green Bay Notre Dame in a non-conference game at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 23rd at the Appleton Family Ice Center.

The victory improved USM’s record to 14-3 overall. The Wildcats play Homestead in a non-conference game at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 23rd at the Ozaukee Ice Arena in Cedarburg.
