Wildcats improve to 13-3 overall

Robby Newton scored four goals to lead the University School boys’ hockey team to a 9-0 victory over the Brookfield Stars co-op in a Classic Eight Conference game played Friday, January 19th at USM.

It was the Wildcats third straight 9-0 win.  The Wildcats out shot their visitors 32-10 in the lopsided conference clash.  Tyler Herzberg, Peter Ells, Andrew Malek, Kylar Fenton, and Ethan Mann joined Newton in scoring goals for the winners.  Goaltender Frank Fee made 10 saves to record the shutout for USM.

Newton, who is an assistant captain on the team, said, “It was a really good game for the team. With it being Senior Night, it was our goal to get those guys out and playing. We went out and took care of business. This marked two-thirds of the way through the season, and we are looking forward to the rest.”

As Newton noted, it was Senior Night.  The Wildcats and their fans celebrated the hockey careers of seniors, Liam Costomiris, Kylar Fenton, Will Kennedy, Ben Rondini, and Bennett Smith-Worthington.

Casey Roepke, USM’s other assistant captain, commented on Senior Night, “The boys came out with motivation tonight to give our seniors an opportunity to get out there and play. There is one senior on our team that goes under the radar, since he doesn't suit up due to a career ending injury in a football game. Will Kennedy is the ideal University School of Milwaukee student, doing very well in the classroom and being a three-sport athlete and a a captain on every single one of those teams. He got the opportunity to suit up tonight and skate on starting lineup. It motivated the guys. We all wanted to go out there and do it for him and the rest of the seniors on the team. Moments like this I'll never forget: seeing a leader on and off the ice smiling his face off skating out there for warm ups and in the starting lineup. Unforgettable.”

The Wildcats took little time in demonstrating their motivation.  Just 1:49 into the match, Newton stripped the puck from the stick of defenseman in the Stars’ zone, stepped in, and fired a shot past the Stars’ starting goalie, Emmett Peters.

USM scored again at 6:32. Forechecking in the right corner of the Stars end, Ethan Mann won a battle for the puck, turned and zipped a pass into the slot toward Herzberg, who moved to the puck then backhanded a low shot into the net, giving the Wildcats a two-goal lead.

The Wildcats scored again a few minutes later.  Once again, they were forechecking aggressively.  Eventually, Alex Thundercloud got the puck at the point and send a crisp pass to Ethan Ford in the left circle.  Swiftly Ford passed it into the slot to Ells, who whipped a shot past Peters at 10:17.

The score soon went to 4-0.  On a breakout play in the Wildcats’ zone, Fenton sent a pass to Christian Blomquist on the right boards.  Blomquist tipped it to Malek who was whizzing by.  Malek took off, raced through center ice, and cut into the right circle of the Stars’ zone.  From there he snapped a shot into the net at 12:01.

The Wildcats scored another four more goals in the second period.  The first came at 5:50.  Battling for the puck in the right corner of the Stars’ end, TJ Fenton knocked it to Blake Carey behind the net.  Carey passed it to Newton in the left corner.  Newton skated out to the top of the near circle and rifled a shot into the net.

USM scored again less than two minutes later.  Herzberg got the puck in the right corner of the Brookfield zone, skated out to the mid-boards then passed it to Casey Roepke at the top of the left circle.  Roepke passed it out to Kylar Fenton at the center point and Fenton coolly bombed a shot past Malcolm Jennings, the Stars’ replacement goalie, at 7:40.

That put the clock on running time.  The Wildcats were still able to score two goals in the period.  They both came from Newton’s stick within 13 seconds of each other.  At 16:08, Ford stopped an attempted clearing play at the Brookfield blue line.  The puck popped down the boards.  Malek fought a defender for it and tipped it to Carey who was hovering nearby.  Carey skated into the circle and centered a pass to Newton who one-timed it in.

Off the following faceoff, the Wildcats got the puck into the Brookfield end.  Carey hustled in and knocked it out to Newton who was skating down the slot.  Newton shot the puck past Jennings to score his fourth goal of the game at 16:21.

Mann scored the lone goal of the third period on a USM power play.  Kylar Fenton was awarded the assist.  Time of the goal: 1:20.

USM is 13-3 and 4-1 in the Classic Eight Conference.  The Wildcats play the Appleton United co-op in a non-conference game at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday,
