Six different players score in 9-0 shutout of Edgewood

Rebounding from a Classic Eight Conference loss to Waukesha last Tuesday, the University School boys’ hockey team defeated Madison Edgewood 9-0 in a non-conference game on Friday, January 12th at USM.

“It was a good response to our loss to Waukesha on Tuesday,” said Jason Woods, USM’s head coach.  “The team played well tonight.”

The annual game between the long-time rivals featured two of the state’s top teams.  The Wildcats entered the game with an 11-3 record and the visiting Crusaders came to USM with a 12-3-1 mark.

The Wildcats took charge early and never let up.  They outshot the Crusaders 27-11 and got goals from six different players.  Andrew Malek led USM with 3 goals.   Robby Newton scored 2 goals, and Christian Blomquist, Ethan Mann, Tyler Herzberg, and Carson Mogush each scored 1 goal for the victors.  Goaltender Patrick Kelly earned the shutout for USM.

Blomquist scored the game’s first goal early in the first period.  Defenseman Ethan Ford stopped a clearing attempt by Edgewood at the Edgewood blue line. Blomquist took a short pass from him and turned toward the net.  He stickhandled around two defenders then fired a low shot past the Crusaders’ starting goalie, Shane Ryan, at 4:12.

USM scored another first period goal later on while on a power play.  Taking a faceoff in Edgewood’s left circle, Malek drew the puck back to Mogush, who lined a low shot on net.  Newton buried the rebound at 11:02.

The Wildcats added four goals to their total in the second period.  Mann and Blake Carey fought for the puck below the goal line in the Edgewood end.  Mann won control, wheeled away into the left circle, then sent a pass back to Carey, who was still below the goal line.  Carey quickly passed it back, and Mann one-timed a shot into the net at 6:34.

A short-handed goal at 10:58 increased USM’s lead to 4-0.  Killing a penalty, a Wildcat zipped the puck down the ice to clear it.   Newton took off like a launched rocket after it.  Seeing him coming, Ryan came out of his net to try to push it away.  His clearing attempt hit Newton and bounced to the side.  Newton got the puck then fired it into the vacated net.

Mogush made it 5-0 with a power play goal at 12:50. Near the left post, he took a pass from Malek and snapped a one-timer past Ryan.  Newton also received an assist on the play.

With 4:10 left in the second period, Edgewood replaced Ryan in goal with Ben Cegelski.  It made little difference to the Wildcats.  They scored again late in the period.  Blomquist collected a loose puck near the USM blue line and headed toward the Edgewood end.  Malek jumped into the play.  As he moved across the Edgewood line, Blomquist centered a pass to Malek who swiftly fired it past Cegelski at 15:16.

The six-goal lead put the clock on running time, but the Wildcats made time to score three more goals in the third period.  Malek scored the first at 0:51 off of passes by Casey Roepke and Blomquist.  At 7:59 Herzberg scored on a power play off an assist by Ford.  Malek completed his hat trick with USM’s final goal, a power play goal, at 8:44 with assists going to Newton and Alex Thundercloud.

Edgewood is now 12-4-1.  The Crusaders play McFarland in a Badge South conference clash at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 16th at the LaBahn Arena in Madison.

The victory improved USM’s overall record to 12-3. USM is also 3-1 in the Classic Eight Conference.  The Wildcats play Brookfield in a Classic Eight Conference game on Friday, January 19th at USM at 7:00 pm.
