Pacelli senior starts out in net and finishes by scoring three at forward

Pacelli coach Rusty Mitch writes:

Our starting goaltender was unavailable for the first, our player who we would use as our backup was out serving a DQ, another player was on a family vacation leaving only 12 players of which one would need to fill in at goal for a conference game against Appleton United.

Senior Captain Daniel Mitch volunteered after stepping up once last season.  Not only did he fill in, but he stopped all 13 shots in the first period to give the Pacelli Co-op a 0-0 game to start the second. Six or seven of those saves came in the final minutes of the period on an Appleton power play.

A wild second period saw nine goals scored with Appleton leading 6-3 after two.

Pacelli fell short, 8-6 in the game with Mitch scoring three of the six Pacelli goals in the final two periods.

I’ve heard of the Gordie Howe hat trick, but I don’t think I’ve heard of a player shutting out a team as a goaltender and then scoring a hat trick in the remainder of a game, at least not at the high school level.

Carter Snyder added two goal and Richard Zupan added four assists.

Matthew Baker had a natural hat trick for Appleton.
