Karly Lamoreaux scored three goals to lead the University School co-op girls’ ice hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Lakeland Union in the opening round of the annual Culver’s Cup Tournament played on Wednesday, December 27th at Hartmeyer Ice Arena in Madison.

The Wildcats outshot the Thunderbirds 45-16 in the non-conference contest.  They took the lead early in the game and held it throughout.

Jenna Klenz scored the Wildcats’ first goal just 1:59 into the game.  The Wildcats’ energetic forecheck forced a Lakeland defender to toss the puck up the left boards.  Hannah Neudorfer caught it, tipped it to Klenz at the near point, then turned toward the net.  Using Neudorfer as a screen, Klenz rifled a wrist shot into the netting behind Lakeland’s goalie, Mariah Lear.

The Wildcats continued to fire, and put 18 other shots on Lear in the opening period.

Lamoreaux scored her first goal on one of those shot during a power play later on in the period. Skating back into the Wildcats’ zone after the Thunderbirds cleared puck, Klenz sent a cross ice pass to her defensive partner, Hannah Gold.  Gold quickly passed it up the right boards to Jordan Bonk.  As she skated into center ice, Bonk gave the puck to Lamoreaux who was circling alongside.  Lamoreaux turned up the speed and raced into the Lakeland end.  From the mid-boards, she gunned a shot into the far side of the net at 11:50.

The Wildcats went ahead 3-0 in the final seconds of the first period.  As the clocked ticked toward the period’s end, Klenz stopped a loose puck at the Thunderbirds’ blue line.  She quickly took a shot.  The puck caromed off a defender’s leg right back to Klenz.  Knowing there was little time left, Klenz whipped a shot toward the net.  Lamoreaux was at the post and tipped past Lear with 1.1 seconds showing on the clock.

Lakeland edged closer with a goal at 11:05 of the second period.  Kailey Godfrey collected the puck along the right boards in the Thunderbirds’ zone.  She sent a pass up the boards to Callie Johnson who spotted Maggie Wohlleber dashing into center ice on the far side and sent a pass to her stick.  Wohlleber rushed behind a Wildcat defenseman and went in to the Wildcats’ zone on a breakaway.  She fired a shot at Juliana Strother, the Wildcats’ goaltender.  The puck rebounded out and hit a Wildcat backchecker. It bounced back to Wohlleber who swiftly popped it into the net for the score.

The sudden turn of events did not faze the Wildcats.  Off the center ice face off, they quickly moved the puck into the Lakeland zone and forechecked earnestly.  Neudorfer chased down a bouncing puck in the right corner and passed it to Bonk who was skating through the near circle.   Lamoreaux described the remainder of the play, “Jordan shot from a little above the goal line between the net and side boards. I was back post, and I tried to put my body in front of it, but it hit the shaft of my stick and went in.”  Lamoreaux’s goal at 11:34 completed her hat trick for the day.

The Wildcats increased their lead a few minutes later.  Megan McPike picked up a loose puck near the USM blue line and darted away.  In center ice she swung toward the right boards, outskated a defender. Skating down the boards in the Thunderbirds zone, McPike cut in toward Lear through the lower part of the circle.  As she did, she blazed a shot into the net at 14:45.

The Thunderbirds scored the only goal of the third period when Wohlleber tallied a shorthanded goal on a breakaway at 6:27. Asucena Boyer had an assist on the play.

USM is now 8-2.  The Wildcats move into the semi-finals of the tournament on Thursday, December 28th. They face the Brookfield Glacier in a non-conference game at 2:45 p.m. at the Hartmeyer Arena.
