Drop 4-1 decision to Minnesota in tourney re-match

After taking two of three games against their foes, the Team Wisconsin Girls earned a spot in the first CCM Minnesota NIT. Unfortunately, their opponent was Team Minnesota, the squad that gave TW a 10-2 drubbing on Saturday.

The girls played much better in the title match, but came up a bit short, losing 4-1 to grab the second place honors.

The first period was scoreless, with MN outshooting TW by a 16-6 margin.

Minnesota scored twice in the middle of the period--including a power play goal--to take a 2-0 lead at exactly the 9:00 mark. Eighty-three seconds later TW got on the board with a power play goal of their own from Hailey Rock, who was assisted by Nikki Plunkett to make it 2-1.

That's how the period would end, with MN again holding the shot edge, 14-6.

The score became 3-1 with a Minnesota goal at 2:36 of the third.

TW killed off 76 seconds of a 5-on-3 to keep the deficit at two, but Minnesota added another goal midway through the stanza at the 11:15 mark to account for the final score.

TW trailed in shots in the period, 12-9.

TW goalie Emily Wigdale stopped 38 of 42 shots in her best performance of the weekend.

TW finished 2-2 in the tourney and was led in goals by Anna Westmark with four and Lauren Roethlisberger with three.

All in all, it was a nice effort by a young team.
