Michigan's Pesendorfer steals show with 42 saves

There were a lot of funny bounces and occurrences in Friday evening's game between Team Michigan and Team Wisconsin, but in the end goalie Michael Pesendorfer stole the show for Michigan as he stopped 42 of 46 shots and led his team to a 5-4 upset of TW.

Michigan grabbed the lead at 4:11 of the first when an errant clearing effort by goalie Saxton Soley was intercepted and turned into a "one" on the scoreboard by Nolan Valleau. Carlo DeGrazia earned a helper on the play.

Wisconsin evened the contest just under five minutes later.

Alexander Dahl slid a pass from the low left circle over to Brad Navin, who was wide open on the backdoor. Navin bobbled the puck but sent it into the net to tie the game at one at 9:06 of the period. Ryan Dau also had an assist.

Michigan made it 2-1 when Cameron Kwaiser scored off the face-off from Soley's left. DeGrazia earned his second assist on the play.

TW held a 16-14 shot edge in the period, but thanks to Pesendorfer, Team MI held the lead.

In the second, TW tied the game just 58 seconds in when Hunter Scott scored from the right circle, with assists to Simon Leahy and Garret Clemment.

The lead was short-lived until Joey Ferriss scored from the slot on a shot that was initially blocked but trickled slowly past Soley to make the score 3-2 in favor of Michigan.

Less than two minutes later, Dahl grabbed a rebound on the low right side and flipped the puck past a sprawling Pesendorfer to tie the game at three at the 6:52 mark. Dau and Navin were credited with assists on the play.

TW grabbed its first lead when Trevor Hoth scored from the right circle at 11:32, with helpers to Trevor Okeson and Connor Johnston to make it 4-3.

Michigan tied the game at 13:54 with its first of two power play goals.

DeGrazia scored on assists to Kwaiser and Jay Pietila to send the game to the final period with the score knotted at four.

TW held a 16-8 shot margin in the period.

Michigan scored the game-winner while on the power play at 5:04 of the third. Aaron Leach earned the GWG with helpers to Frank Gilbert and Brad Annas.

The boys from the Badger State had a golden opportunity denied when a long stretch pass found Dahl's stick and he broke in on a potential 2-on-1 with Navin. The only problem was that the referree was in the way and Dahl lost the puck and a possible scoring chance, much to the chagrin of the TW coaching staff.

Wisconsin called time-out with 1:51 left to discuss strategy, but as time wound down to just more than 20 seconds, Soley came off for an extra attacker. A whistle was blown and in the confusion, Cody Dixon was charged with a ten-minute miscounduct penalty.

The ensuing face-off at center ice happened with 19 seconds left, and as TW tried to get a shot on net, the siren sounded, ending the game with a 5-4 Team Michigan victory.

Wisconsin once again held the shot edge (14-9), but were unable to take advantage.

Soley finished with 26 saves for TW, who will face Minnesota Selects at 10:15am on Saturday.
