Second SCT title in last seven years

Section 8 earned the 2011 Senior Class Tournament title with a 7-2 victory over Section 1 Sunday afternoon at the Waupun Community Center.

Section 1 tallied first on a power play early in the first. With just two seconds left on the man advantage, Karl Anderson scored with assists to Ben Novak and Ryan Dau for 1-0 lead at 4:48 of the first.

Section 8 came back to tie the game just 39 seconds later with hometown hero Curt Hansen scoring an unassisted goal at 5:27.

Anderson gave Section 1 the lead, again on a power play goal. Dau earned his second assist on play, and would also capture the scoring "title" in the SCT with nine points.

Section 8 came back to tie the game just under two minutes later when Fred West scored his first of three goals at the 8:58 mark. Simon Leahy earned an assist on the play.

Austin Haga earned the game-winner for Section 8 when he won the race to a puck that was chipped out of the zone and went in on a 2-on-0 break. His shot from the low left circle beat Section 1 goalie Garrett Jensen top shelf blocker side at 14:31, and the period would end with Section 8 holding a one-goal lead.

Section 1 did hold a 14-8 shot edge, but Section 8 goalie Ben Myers did a yeoman's job, stopping 12 shots in the 18 minute period.

West scored his second goal--also unassisted--at 5:57 of the second to increase the Section 8 lead to 4-2. That's how the period would end, with each team getting eight shots on goal.

The third period was all Section 8, although Section 1 had a 15-10 advantage on shots in the period.

Danny Valoe scored twice in a five minute span in the middle of the period, including a power play goal to give Section 8 a 6-2 lead. Brandon Thelen and Hansen each were credited with assists.

West closed out the scoring at 11:44 for his hat trick, assisted by Nick Boehnlein.

Joe Rebedew kept Section 1 off the scoreboard in the final period, stopping all 15 shots on net in the period, for a total of 18 in the game. Myers had 17 in his stint for a team total of 35 saves.

Jensen (10) and Adam Brahmstadt (9) combined for 19 saves for Section 1.

On its way to the championship game, Section 8 defeated Section 2 in a 2-1 shootout win Friday night and beat Section 6 by a score of 5-1 Saturday afternoon.
