While the other Section 3 home teams faltered, the Warriors downed Antigo 9-1

On a night when the other three Section 3 home teams (read: higher seeds) all fell, the Wausau West Warriors rolled over the Antigo Red Robins 9-1 at Marathon Park. Wausau East (#2 Seed), Tomahawk (#3) and Northland Pines (#4), all lost their Regional Final contests on Thursday night. The Warriors will next face #5 DC Everest on Tuesday night in the Sectional Semi-finals. The Evergreens downed Northland Pines at the dome in Eagle River on Tuesday.

Warriors coach Pete Susens wasn’t really surprised at all of the upsets, “When we did the seeding meeting, I thought we were number one, and East was two, but then 3-4-5-6, and even 7 were pretty much even. Anybody could beat anybody. It was good to see the Wisconsin Valley teams win their games.”

The spirited Red Robins came out ready to play and held off West for the first six minutes of the game. But then Garret Clemment and Cody Hahner attacked the Antigo zone on a two on one. Clemment drew the defense over and passed to Hahner who scored the first goal of the game at 6:07. West would get goals from Robbie Poirier, two from Ryan Condon, and a power play goal from Clemment before the first period ended and take a 5-0 lead into the first intermission.

The second period was a little more even, with Wausau getting two more power play goals from Tanner Blaschka and Seth Wage. Blaschka’s goal at 3:09 put the game into running time and ended the night for Antigo goalie Jacob Sennholz who finished with 15 saves. Chris Eckerman took over at that point. The Robins finally got on the board at 14:21, when Matt Wolter scored a power play goal on a slap shot from the point that snuck through traffic and past David Knetter.

“I thought we did a good job early,” said coach Susens. “We got a little complacent in the second period, but then came back strong.”

The Warriors added a power play goal by John Feemster and an even-strength goal from Tanner Gould in the third period. Knetter finished the game with 24 saves.

The coach was pleased with his team’s four power play goals. “We moved the puck pretty well on the power play, and scored some goals, which had been kind of a bugaboo for us lately. They weren’t very aggressive with their penalty kill, and our guys were patient and we took what they gave us.”

Tuesday night’s game time at Marathon Park has not been set yet. In the other semi-final, #6 Mosinee will host #7 SPASH.
