The “Quest for Madison” Begins

The Fox Cities Stars and Black River Falls/Tomah (BRF) opened the 2011 WIAA Girls Hockey playoffs.

 The Fox Cities Stars and Black River Falls/Tomah (BRF) played in their inaugural WIAA playoffs on February 15th.  They were the opening game for the 2011 WIAA Girls Hockey playoffs and only girls hockey game on the evening.

BRF started the game quickly scoring the first goal 41 seconds into the game on a goal by Riley Smith with Mackenzie Hoeschle and Lydia Cloud being credited with assists.  Less than two minutes later, BRF’s lead was increased to two as Zayta Thundercloud scored an unassisted goal at the 2:30 mark of the first.  Fox Cities countered with 7:03 remaining in the first, when Caiti Jansen scored with assists from Julia Kowitz and Kaylee Weycker.  Natasha Hizer gave BRF a two goal lead with an unassisted goal with 2:54 showing on the clock to complete the scoring in the first period.  BRF 3 FCS 1.  Miranda Jessie had 3 saves for BRF, while Shannen Larsen-Van Alstine had 12 saves for FCS.
 
Once again, BRF scored quickly as Mara Ransom assisted on a goal by Natasha Hizer 48 seconds after the puck dropped to start the second period.  Fox Cities’ Jansen scored her second goal of the game at 2:08 of the second.  Lydia Cloud gave Black River Falls/Tomah a three goal lead on an unassisted goal 3 minutes 52 seconds into the period.  The lead went to four, when Cloud fed the puck to Hizer for a powerplay goal at 7:07 of the second.  The Stars scored a powerplay goal of their own fifty seconds later, when Liz Martin and Julia Kowitz assisted on Jordan Waldhart’s goal making the score 6-3.  Fox Cities cut the lead to two, when Caiti Jansen scored her third goal with Rian Lennon and Waldhart assisting on the play.  Lennon scored with 1:45 left in the second to bring the Stars within one at the end of two periods.  BRF 6 FCS 5.  Jessie had 10 saves and Van Alstine collected 4 in the second.
 
Hoeschle increased Black River Falls’ lead to two, when she scored on an assist by Lydia Cloud 1:04 into the third period.  Hizer scored her fourth goal of the game thirty-nine seconds later (and the game winner) with an assist from Anissa Flick.  Liz Martin wasn’t going to let the Stars quit and scored a goal with an assists from Jansen with 12:20 remaining.  Cloud answered for BRF thirty-eight seconds later with Kaleigh Buttner and Hannah Waddel assisting on the play.  Mollie Patzke scored for Fox Cities with assists being credited to Rian Lennon and Leigh McGuirk.  Unfortunately for FCS, this completed the scoring in the game with Black River Falls/Tomah winning 9-7.  Miranda Jessie had 9 saves in the third and finished the game with 22.  Shannen Larsen-Van Alstine had 9 saves for FCS in the third finishing the game with 25 saves.
 
Fox Cities finished their inaugural season in the WIAA with a 4-19-0 record.  Black River Falls season continues as they travel to Fond du Lac on Thursday, February 17th.  They will take on Fond du Lac Co-op Warbirds at 5:00 PM in a regional final game.
