Four teams advance to Sunday's bracket round

Saturday

Girls Tier II (14U): Nova Ice Dogs 1, Black Cats 0

In a battle of dogs and cats, the canines came out a little ahead as the Nova Ice Dogs edged the Black Cats from western WI 1-0 Saturday morning in Troy, MI.

Nova got a goal from Cordelia Bucy in the middle period and hung on through a scrappy final period to get the one-goal victory.

Each team was assessed a '5 and a 10' for a checking major in the final minutes of regulation, but neither squad was able to penetrate the foe's PK units for another score. The Black Cats had a 5-on-4 for the last 1:25 of the game (and although the stats don't show it, I would guess 6-on-4 with a pulled goalie for part of it) but were unable to tally the equalizer, dropping their first game against two victories in the tournament pool play round.

Sydney Seeley and Caitlyn Erickson split time in net and each finished with seven saves. Shots were 24-15 in favor of the 'Cats.

The Black Cats qualified for the Quarterfinals, taking the #3 seed in the National Conference (Liberty Pool). They will face the MCYH Edge (Monroe County Youth Hockey, Rochester, NY) at 7:15am CT Sunday.

Get some sleep, ladies, and good luck tomorrow!

Boys Tier I (15 o): Honeybaked 4, Team WI 2

Cole Danielson gave TW a 1-0 lead early in the second only to see Honeybaked come back with three goals in span of 12 minutes in the period to give the Michigan-based team a 3-1 lead going into the final period.

Danielson scored his second goal on the power play early in the third to cut the lead to 3-2, but Honeybaked got a goal midway through the period to account for the 4-2 final. TW pulled their goalie with just over a minute left but were unable to get any closer.

Drake Baldwin had two helpers, while Jake Schmaltz and Sam Stange each added one for TW.

TW held a 37-20 shot edge in the contest, with Cole Garver stopping 16 for TW.

Team Wisconsin finished the tourney with a mark of 1-2, with one loss coming in a shootout.

Boys Tier I (18U): Team Wisconsin 5, Ohio Blue Jackets 1

Ian Malcolmson scored twice and added an assist, while Cole Caufield, Aaron Grounds, and Jack Gorniak each notched a pair of helpers as Team Wisconsin rolled to a 5-1 win Saturday afternoon in Pittsburgh.

Brady Bjork, Logan Geisness, and Jadon Motquin also scored for TW, who improved to 3-0 in pool play, grabbing the #1 seed in the Liberty Pool in the process.

The Blue Jackets held a 28-22 shot edge, with TW goalie Sam Dunn snagging 21 of them in the win.

TW will play at 11:30am CT against Shattuck St. Marys, #1 seed in the USA Pool.

Boys Tier II (16U): Milwaukee Kelly 5, Ashburn Xtreme 2

The WEHL squad grabbed an early 2-0 lead, only to see the Xtreme tie up the game in the second. But the third was all Kelly, as they scored three goals in the final stanza to earn a 5-2 win Saturday aft in Plano, TX.

Marshall Walked tallied three points (1g-2a), while Andrew Malek, Hunter Leonhard, and Caleb Baxter each had a goal and a helper in the win. Wally Haines scored the final goal for MK.

The netminders were kept busy, as Kelly held a 42-39 shot edge in the game. Patrick Kelly (who the team is named after--just kidding!) stopped 37 pucks in a stellar effort for the Milwaukee-area team.

The team finished 2-1, second in the Liberty Pool, and will face the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies Gold at 10:30am CT tomorrow in Frisco, TX in Quarterfinal action.

Girls Tier I (16U): Team Wisconsin 6, Dallas Selects 0

By Mike McKersie

Team Wisconsin scored the same number of goals as the periods are numbered as they went 1-2-3 for a 6-0 win over the Dallas Selects Saturday afternoon in Detroit.

TW finished the Nationals weekend on a great note. They controlled most of the play the entire game.

The first goal came in a scramble in front. The loose puck was chipped in by Dany Robson (Hudson) with an assist to Margo Thousand (Waunakee) and Abby Ahlborn (Eagle River). The first period would end 1-0 in favor of TW.

At 4:59 of the second TW got a power play goal by Gabby Turer (USM) from AJ Weiss (Stevens Point) and Ava Kison (Eau Claire).

Soon after, Dallas was called for two penalties to put TW on a 5-on-3. A shot from left circle created a rebound that was scooped up by a strong effort in front by Ahlborn and she tucked it past the goalie.

Later in the third, Thousand picked up the puck in corner and stepped out to the front of the net. She took a backhand shot that created a rebound and she tucked it in behind the Dallas goalie to make it 4-0

Just minutes later, Kison entered the zone 2-1 with Abigail Stow (Eau Claire) and slid a picture perfect pass over. Stow ripped a shot past the goalie to make it 5-0.

Late in the third, Mia Dunning (Bay Area) made a great stretch pass, creating a 2-on-1. Lauren Hull (Fox Cities) slid a beautiful pass over to Annika Horman (Appleton North), who took a quick snapshot past the defender's leg and just inside the post, 6-0.

Marie Dedert (USM) and Sydney McKersie (Metro Lynx) continued their dominance in net combining for the shut out. Dedert played the first half and finished the weekend with a 1.5 goals against average and a save percentage of .900. McKersie finished the game and on the weekend only surrendered 1 goal and had an impressive 0.62 goals against average and a save percentage of .974.

Although TW played very well, going 1-2 and only allowing four goals, they failed to make the semifinal round of four.

Girls Tier II (16U): Nova Ice Dogs 3, Wisconsin Selects 2 (so)

The Selects held two leads but the Ice Dogs battled back both times to tie the game at two, which is how regulation ended. Neither team scored in the five minute extra period, so the contest went to the dreaded shoot-out, where the game turns from the team to the individual.

After three rounds of shooters, the Selects held a narrow 1-0 margin, but the Ice Dogs got goals on each of their final two shots to earn the win, 2-1, making the final official score 3-2.

Emma Serres scored the first goal of the game in the opening period and the final goal for the Selects in the shootout. Trinity Foster scored early in the third to give the Selects a brief 2-1 lead. Margaret Wohlleber, Michaela Fritz, and Taylor Epperson all had helpers for the Selects.

Shots were 29-19 in favor of the Selects, with goalie Ivy Shonka stopping 17 shots in 56 minutes of play.

The Selects took the #1 seed in the Liberty Pool, and will take on Assabet Valley (Concord, Massachusetts) Sunday morning at 9:15am CT in the Quarterfinal round.
