Daggett taps in game-winner near end of extra session

University School lost an overtime game to Monona Grove 3-2 at Hartmeyer Arena in Madison Friday night.

The game was close throughout, but Monona Grove had the predominance in shots, 48-25. USM senior goaltender Ben Myers kept his team in the game until the very end.

The Wildcats scored the game's first goal while on a power play. Senior Simon Leahy took a shot on goal from the right side and headed in for the rebound off of Monona Grove's senior goalie Christian Burk. USM senior Aaron Storch got the puck on the rebound and knocked it to the oncoming Leahy who popped it in at 10:07 of the first period.

Monona Grove tied the game a few minutes later on a power play. Senior Cole Schuchardt sent the puck to senior defenseman Trevor Okeson who passed it in from the point to freshman Zach Johnston in the right circle. Johnston pulled the puck around a defender skated into the slot and fired it past Myers at 14:18 of the first period.

USM went back ahead early in the second period. Forechecking, Leahy collected a loose puck behind the net. He lined a pass out front to junior Corey Roadhouse who gunned it in at 6:42.

Monona Grove scored the tying goal in the third period. Taking a face-off in the USM end, Okeson pulled the puck around his face-off opponent, skated toward the net, and quickly took a shot that beat Myers at 6:09.

The game stayed close, but USM got into penalty trouble at the end of the game and could not generate as much offense as Monona Grove.

The Wildcats had to kill a two minute penalty at 13:11 of the third period and another for the first two minutes of the overtime period. They then were assessed a five minute major for the last 4:34 of the overtime. It was on this final power play that Monona Grove finally won the game.

As Monona Grove moved the puck around the USM end, freshman Travis Johnston sent the puck to junior Taylor Hatton on the right side. Hatton took an off angle shot that hit Myers and careened toward the goal line in front of the wide open net. Monona Grove senior Brett Daggett skated in and tapped the puck across the line for the game winning goal at 6:24 in OT.

In the game Myers made 45 saves while Burk made 23.

Monona Grove is now 17-3. USM's record fell to 13-7-2. The Wildcats have only a short time to fret their loss. They play another game in less than 24 hours. They face-off against their old rival, Madison Edgewood, at 5:00 p.m. Saturday at USM.
