Plaza goal in the second holds up for Central WI

Central Wisconsin got a second period power play goal from Maggie Plaza and that held up as the Storm edged the Cap City Cougars 1-0 Friday afternoon in the semifinal round of the girls State Tourney at the Clamshell.

The first period was scoreless as both teams played a defensive-minded game, with few forays into high-quality scoring zones. The Storm did have a 5-on-3 advantage for 68 seconds but was unable to capitalize.

Shots in the period had each squad with three.

Each team had a power play chance early in the second but didn't score. Katelyn Ramthun had a point blank chance on the second power play from close in, but Cap City goalie Taylor Thornton was there to make the stop.

The Storm got on the board first while on the man advantage in the middle of the period. Taylor Treu fired a shot from the top of the right circle but Thornton made the initial stop. The puck bounced to her right where Plaza corralled it and fired it back in to make it 1-0.

That's how the period ended, with shots 10-4 in favor of the Storm.

In the third, the Storm penalty kill and goalie work for Cap City stood tall.

Early on, Thornton made a nice stop on a Ramthun advance to keep the score at 1-0.

Central Wisconsin killed off two penalties in the middle of the period and even had a nice short-handed 2-on-1 chance turned aside by the Cap City goalie.

Thornton came out with 1:10 left to give the Cougars an extra skater and even got a further edge with a Storm penalty with eight seconds left.

Cap City put some good pressure on the Storm goalie, Chloe Westberg, but she repelled a couple shots and earned the win when the horn sounded.

Shots were 7-4 in favor of the Storm.

Westberg finished with 11 saves while Thornton played well for the Cougars, stopping 19 pucks.
