Two goals in the third period send Icebears to the championship

In what was expected to be a low-scoring game, the Bay Area Icebears scored twice in the third period to claim a 2-1 win over the Hayward Hurricanes in the opening game of the Girls State Tournament on Friday morning.

The two teams last met on New Year’s Eve in Hayward and played 59 minutes of hockey without recording a goal. Hayward’s Lauren Tremblay registered 34 saves, while her counterpart Ana Holzbach stopped all 37 shots she faced.

Seven minutes into the opening period, Autumn Fenske got the puck to the front of the Ice Bears goal where Jenna Curtis put it past Bay Area goaltender Holzbach.

Early in the third period Abby Anderson redirected a point shot from Mia Dunning on a Bay Area power play to tie the game at one each. Three minutes later, Anderson threw a shot on goal and Megan Saari forced the rebound through Trembley’s pads to put the Ice Bears up 2-1.

Hayward stepped up the pressure for the remainder of the period firing shots on Holzbach from all angles. They kept at it until there were two minutes left, when Bay Area got control of the puck and took it to the Hayward end. The Hurricanes were not able to get the puck out of the zone and couldn’t get their goalie off the ice.
