Hilltoppers get a big win over Vikings

For about 46 minutes the Marquette Hilltoppers had nothing to show for  their big matchup in Stoughton Tuesday night. The winner gets in the driver's seat for the section 7 top seed which gets determined February 6th.

This game was scoreless until under a minute left in the second period.  With the Vikings on the power play Trevor Hoth dug the puck out from behind the net and centered a great pass to Neil McMillan who buried it behind 'Toppers goalie Michael Roznik for the 1-0 lead after two periods.

The tables got turned on Stoughton in the third period, though. After Marquette started the period a man down with the Vikings getting a power play goal from Isaac Hale, it was 2-0 Stoughton, both power play goals.

Stoughton became a regular visitor to the penalty box. Marquette got a four minute power play but was too patient at times. "We were too patient at times and they have a great group of players," said MUHS coach Troy Sippl. "When two teams like this get together special teams play a big factor."

Marquette's comeback started at 5:15 left in the 3rd period. With a shot on goal, Stoughton goalie Dylan Anderson left a rebound out in front of the net that Joe Washkovick poked home to make it a 2-1 game.

With the game still in doubt, Marquette used their timeout with an offensive zone faceoff pending. With Roznik pulled for the extra attacker, Marquette was able to keep the puck in the zone, and with nine seconds away from a tough loss, they scored the tying goal from Joe Llaurado, who sent a wrist shot from the right circle past Anderson forcing the extra session.

Stoughton really put pressure on in overtime and could not get anything past Roznik, who finished with 26 saves. Marquette was able to get a clear and Ben Lowe picked the puck up. He was able to turn the defense around and  got in on Anderson. In the middle of the scrum in front, the puck went off a Stoughton player and into the net, silencing a very loud Mandt Center crowd.

So is Marquette in the driver's seat ? Coach Sippl remained kinda mum on it saying," Its too early to tell."

Both teams are playing full schedules this week and know it's not a done deal.

"We are gonna have to rebound quick with another top 10 team coming in Thursday, and playing Edgewood Saturday," said Stoughton Coach Rick Fleming.

"This was a tough one but we got a good group of guys so we'll get back to practice and be ready for Thursday," said McMillan.
