Battle between Big Rivers foes goes to the Raiders

Aaron Grounds and Chase Blackmun each scored a pair of points in leading Hudson past Big Rivers foe Eau Claire Memorial 4-0 in the first game of the evening session on Quarterfinal Thursday at the Clamshell.

The pace of the game was determined early as the Raiders came out firing, throwing 16 shots on net in the first period.

Trevor Hudecek made a great save on a point blast by Jordan Halverson, diving to make a spectacular stick save after being down after the initial shot a couple minutes in.

The Raiders tallied twice in a span of 2:19 in the middle of the period to build a 2-0 lead over the Old Abes.

Grounds grabbed a lead pass from Grady Gornick at the blue line, just staying onsides before skating in on Hudecek and sliding the puck betwixt the wickets for the 1-0 lead at the 9:25 mark.

Two minutes later, Dan Lieneman cashed in on a rebound from the low left side to double the lead. Grounds and Blackmun were given assists on the play.

Hudecek made another nice stop on a short-handed chance by Cole Danielson with three minutes left. The Old Abes were called for too many men at the end of the period, and that would carry over to the second as the score remained at 2-0. Shots were 16-3 in favor of Hudson.

ECM had a couple of power play chances early in the period but could not convert.

While just into the second power play, Hutson Collins was carrying the puck near the net while being pestered by Danielson. The puck popped free and if not for an alert Hudecek, would have been the third goal.

George Nuutinen did make it 3-0 with 39 seconds left when his shot from close-in bounced off the right shoulder of the goalie and into the net. Isaiah Bewell earned an assist on the play.

The Raiders scored their final goal while playing short-handed in the final period.

Blackmun grabbed the puck in the d-zone and sent it ahead to Ben Lundeen, but it bounced off his skate into the neutral zone. Blackmun sped up and grabbed the puck before passing across to Danielson, who tallied from the backdoor to make it 4-0 with 7:21 left.

Hudecek was replaced by Nick Schultz in an effort to give the back-up ECM netminder some state tourney action in the last four-plus minutes of play.

After some fancy accounting by the Coliseum scoring staff, it was determined that Hudecek (24) and Schultz (2) combined for 26 saves for ECM, while Anthony Howard quietly stopped 11 shots while earning the shutout for Hudson.
